I've never seen Pabst Blue Ribbon around here, no.
What screen flashed by?
when I typed verifer /query in the command prompt screen it scrolled down so quickly I couldn't see what was written
Well that doesn't sound like verifier is disabled in any case; if that were so, you would see "No drivers are currently verified".

Did you enter the command in the command prompt, or in the Run box or Start menu? If you did either of the last 2, the command will quickly flash and disappear, like you described.
I entered it in the command prompt Box.
Since the last post I have just installed photoshop elements 9 and have had 2 BSODs.
In both instances I could find no minidump file. I enabled mini dump as per instructions. I've done a search for *.dmp in C drive but nothing. The first BSOD said it was unable to write error file. The second BSOD happened when I was out walking the dog!
I reset the driver verifier before installing the latest software.
Any thoughts or should I make a new post - I did make a new BSOD_jcgriff file
Run some hardware diagnostics.
Memtest86: RAM - Test with Memtest86+
Run the Short and Long DST tests with SeaTools.
Go ahead and upload a new jcgriff2 report as well.
thanks jonathan for all your help - here is the file......I'll try to run the Ram test later - here is the xml file from the event error log :

Given that data, my recommendation to run SeaTools hard drive diagnostics is well grounded; be sure to do that, and confirm whether the drive is actually bad or not.Code:Event[4145]: Log Name: System Source: iaStor Date: 2011-01-28T17:50:32.770 Event ID: 9 Task: N/A Level: Error Opcode: N/A Keyword: Classic User: N/A User Name: N/A Computer: user-PC Description: The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor0, did not respond within the timeout period. will do tomorrow - tried the ram test with a usb stick but it didn't seem to recognise the ISO file - is there a special way of loading the iso file into the USB ? Off to bed now
If you're going to do USB, use the USB installer: http://memtest.org/download/4.20/mem....installer.zip
RAM test passed on 2 out of 2 tries stopped it after 2.
Seagate would not install on the pc - started then hung the pc - re- downlloaded but same again.
Made a DOS image file on a CD and ran it from the CD drive - Passed both long and short tests.
