Windows 7: LogonUI.exe - Bad Image

LogonUI.exe - Bad Image

My daughter has an ASUS netbook with Windows 7 on it. It has been running very slow and hanging alot lately. I ran an antimalware quick scan and cleaned about 30 adware items from the system and it rebooted just fine. Ran a deeper scan and found four more, when I went to remove them the program said it needed to reboot. When it tried to restart it did not get to the user name and password window, but gave me a error box titled LogonUI.exe - Bad Image. After a long string it said the comctl32.dll files was not configured to run in Windows or it had a error. I can get to the System Recovery Options via F8, but no joy with any try of a Safe Mode boot. I have tried Start Up Repair, no joy. System Restore to multiple earlier restore points, no joy. Running sfc /scannow yields a statement of a pending system repair which requires a reboot to complete. A reboot brings me back to the same LogonUI.exe - Bad Image error.

Any ideas?
