Windows 7: BSOD, Lagging and Freezing

BSOD, Lagging and Freezing

I have been having several problems over the past week or so:

Ive had several Kernal_data_input_error BSODs.
Constant lagging and freezing problems.
Windows explorer resetting
Desktop window manager not responding
WLAN Autoconfig not working

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
OEM (pre-installed on laptop)
Had the laptop for just over a year
I have re-installed several times, and so has "techguys" from Currys/PC World

I have run memory checks, Check Disk, and none of those work!

DISK_HARDWARE_ERROR: There was error with disk hardware

It's reading as a hardware failure on my end, though my debugger also encountered a symbol error, so my report could be inaccurate. I'm not showing any specific drivers out of date but you have a massive number of dump files there and I only viewed a couple of them.
However the disk hardware failure appears to be a common theme here.
Perhaps one of the more experienced guys will have better input, but I'm thinking bad hard disk, or hard disk controller.

Hi, Bob, and welcome to the forum. Part of your problems seem to be McAfee. Your Error Report shows it as a faulting application in several instances. McAfee is notorious for causing BSOD's on some Win 7 systems. I recommend that you uninstall it using this removal tool: Tool. Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials in its place.

I looked at your four most recent dumps.

Run Disk Check on all of your hard drives -
Quote:
Run CHKDSK /R /F from an elevated (Run as adminstrator) Command Prompt. Please do this for each hard drive on your system.
When it tells you it can't do it right now - and asks you if you'd like to do it at the next reboot - answer Y (for Yes) and press Enter. Then reboot and let the test run. It may take a while for it to run, but keep an occasional eye on it to see if it generates any errors. See "CHKDSK LogFile" below in order to check the results of the test.

Elevated Command Prompt:
Go to Start and type in "cmd.exe" (without the quotes)
At the top of the Search Box, right click on Cmd.exe and select "Run as administrator"

CHKDSK LogFile:
Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Expand the Windows logs heading, then select the Application log file entry.
Double click on the Source column header.
Scroll down the list until you find the Chkdsk entry (wininit for Windows 7) (winlogon for XP).

Copy/paste the results into your next post.

Update the following drivers. Outdated drivers can and do cause BSOD's. The one in red font is quite obsolete.

How to find drivers -
Quote:
- I have listed links to most of the drivers in the code box above. Please use the links there to see what info I've found about those drivers.
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

- - The most common drivers are listed on this page:
Driver Reference
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page:

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR (7a)
The requested page of kernel data could not be read in. Typically caused by
a bad block in the paging file or disk controller error. Also see
KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR.
If the error status is 0xC000000E, 0xC000009C, 0xC000009D or 0xC0000185,
it means the disk subsystem has experienced a failure.
If the error status is 0xC000009A, then it means the request failed because
a filesystem failed to make forward progress.
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000020, lock type that was held (value 1,2,3, or PTE address)
Arg2: ffffffffc000009d, error status (normally i/o status code)
Arg3: fffffa8004b117c8, current process (virtual address for lock type 3, or PTE)
Arg4: 0000000000000000, virtual address that could not be in-paged (or PTE contents if arg1 is a PTE address)

Your HDD can have bad clusters anytime. Aside from infant mortality failures, it is statistical.

You should back up your data and replace the disk, which I assume is still under warranty.

s**t happens

Indeed, some hdd's can fail almost right away, others can last 10 years or more. There is really no way to know what you have.

Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit

Thanks for reporting back.

A few bad clusters are not unusual even on a brand new hard drive. However, they can definitely be a sign of a failing hard drive. I would back up my data and run Check Disk weekly to see if any more bad clusters appear. If they do, you can assume your hard drive is failing. If it were my computer, I would replace the hard drive.

I am glad you are no longer getting BSOD's; it does look like McAfee was once again the culprit.

If you do not use a dialup connection, you can uninstall the modem via Device Manager or rename those modem drivers. Create a restore point, using Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers, locate the driver files, and rename them from .sys to .old. Reboot and the drivers will not load. This will break whatever software or hardware these drivers are associated with.

I try to create a restore point and it just says:

The restore point could not be created for the following reasons:

The specified object was not found. (0x80042308)

Please try again.

Ive tried a couple of times but nothing!

Well it looks like we got this far without even trying a secure file check.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If you can't create a restore point it's likely a core os file is corrupted (SFC checks that) Either way it's a quick checkup.
