    Frequent Crashes

My system has been crashing frequently. I never get a BSOD--just a black screen and a reboot. Frequently happens while using Quicken Premier 2010, but also happens when Quicken isn't running. I can consistently reproduce it by simply clicking through video files I have stored in a local directory that I share over my LAN (clicking--not even double clicking).

I've run the Windows 7 memory test and it reported no memory issues. I saw a post somewhere that AVG anti-virus caused this, so I've removed that and have just installed Windows Security Essentials. I've updated my video driver, but all other drivers appear to be up to date. Yet despite all this, the problem is still readily reproducible.

    Basic system info:
    - Windows 7 Pro x64
    - Original OS installed was Vista Bus 64, but I got 7 upgrade disks via mail-in as part of the system purchase and did a fresh install, not an upgrade
    - An OEM or full retail version? Not sure--came from Microsoft so I believe it's full retail.
    - The system is 1 year old
    - I have not re-installed the OS since the original Windows 7 install

Thank you for any help you can provide!

    Cheers,

    Tim

The most recent dump file dated 14-7-2010 indicates that the driver for Intel Matrix Storage Manager caused the crash
Update it in safe mode with networking Intel® Driver Update Utility

    Code:
    BugCheck 9088, {fffff8800630a8c0, fffff8800630a8c4, fffff8800630a8d0, fffff8800630a8d4}

    Probably caused by : iaStor.sys ( iaStor+4b41e )
Your X10 USB Wireless Transceiver driver is out of date
    Update it, http://www.x10.com/support/support_soft1.htm
This device is obsolete and the manufacturer hasn't updated the software for Windows7
    Code:
    x10ufx2.sys fffff880`055e6000 fffff880`055f2000 0x0000c000 0x456f66db 01/12/2006 03:18:51

Thank you for the help. I've updated the X10 driver--I too had noticed that in the event manager. I didn't see the Intel issue however.

So, I upgraded from Intel® Rapid Storage Technology driver version 9.6.0.1014 to 10.1.0.1008, but was able to recreate the issue. Should I downgrade to version 8.9.0.1023? I've uploaded a new zip file with details on the latest crash.

    Thank you again,

    Tim

Same cause, either downgrade to a more stable driver version or disable that driver if you don't use it

I tried downgrading and my system still crashes. I don't see how I can disable it; isn't this essentially the driver for my hard drive?

Intel has two different file names for their 10.1.0.1008 of Intel Rapid Storage Technology; iata_enu.exe and iata_cd.exe. I had previously used iata_enu.exe--but I can't figure out what (if anything) is the difference between the two. I'm going to try iata_cd.exe, but I can't imagine it will make a difference.

    Any other thoughts or suggestions?

    Thanks again!

The only difference between the two is the enu_ is English and the cd_ is Multi-language.

My system continues to crash with each of the 3 available Intel® Rapid Storage Technology driver versions (8.9.0.1023, 9.6.0.1014, 10.1.0.1008). I tried switch my BIOS to use IDE and AHCI (it's set for RAID), but Windows wouldn't start up either way. I even tried just removing the Intel driver, and again Windows wouldn't start up--I had to do a system restore.

I'm out of ideas--any suggestions? The only remaining thing I can think to do is take the computer back to the store where I bought it, as it's not usable as is since it crashes every time I try to so much as access a video file, which I'm currently in need of editing...

Thanks for the help thus far and for any additional help anyone can provide!
