    Elusive BSoD

Been having issues with BSoD but can't seem to pinpoint what the issue is. I'll go 2 or 3 days without problems, and sometimes I get 2 or 3 Kernel-Power 41 errors in the same day, and sometimes in the same hour.

I got an HP laptop a few weeks ago and I did a clean install of Windows 7 to get rid of all the HP bloatware.

HP Pavilion dv6-3210us Notebook PC, champagne | HP® Official Store

Had a few issues with updating drivers to begin with but I thought I had gotten them all taken care of.

I'm looking at my event log, and just before the crash there was an error, "The performance strings in the Performance registry value is corrupted when process Performance extension counter provider. The BaseIndex value from the Performance registry is the first DWORD in the Data section, LastCounter value is the second DWORD in the Data section, and LastHelp value is the third DWORD in the Data section."

and also, "Unloading the performance counter strings for service WmiApRpl (WmiApRpl) failed. The first DWORD in the Data section contains the error code."

I did a google search for wmiaprpl and came up with this page: An application or a service that uses the Wmiaprpl.dll module crashes when the application or the service enumerates the returned performance objects under the HKEY_PERFORMANCE_DATA registry key

Now, I don't claim to be a 'tech whiz' so I'm hesitant to do anything without fully understanding what's going on. Should I try this 'Hotfix'?

I looked at your three most recent dumps. All three are Driver Verifier enabled dumps and all three blame Windows system drivers, which are very unlikely to be the cause. Turn off Driver Verifier: Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable. I also looked at the three dumps previous to those which are not Verifier enabled dumps. All three of those are bugcheck A. They blame ntkrnlmp.exe, a Windows system core file and very unlikely to the real cause. All three reference memory.

What AV and firewall are you using? Your perfmon report does not show either one.

I suggest that you test your RAM with Memtest following the instructions in this tutorial: RAM - Test with Memtest86+. Run Memtest from a cold boot after your computer has been off for an hour or so. Let it run for a minimum of seven passes. This will take 6-8 hours. Post back with your results.

Okay, I just finished updating my audio and graphics drivers (through HP support website) which were actually in a really bad way.

The reason no anti-virus of firewall showed up in my perfmon is because I don't have any. The computer came with Norton, but the went when I did the clean install and I haven't looked into getting back because I've only known Norton to cause problems in my past experience. What do you recommend?

I've disabled driver verifier, but I'm sort of busy at the moment, so I'll run the RAM test in a few hours.

That explains why perfmon did not show an antivirus or a firewall! I suggest that you download and install Microsoft Security Essentials and turn on Windows Firewall. Both usually run very smoothly with Win 7. Avast also runs very well on most Win 7 systems. Your BSOD's should decrease with Driver Verifier disabled.

Okay, I've got a memtest cd created, but I've got to get to bed. I shutdown the laptop and run the memtest while I'm at work tomorrow.

I was able to get the memtest going, but for some reason my computer will boot up right in the middle of it!? The memtest runs for 2 or 3 minutes (It gets through 2% or 3% of a pass), and then windows boots automatically.

Also, I have installed essentials like you have suggested.

    Good job on installing MSE.

That sounds like your computer is shutting down while Memtest is running and then Windows is booting. This would point to a hardware issue of some kind since Memtest runs independent of Windows. Windows is not loaded when Memtest runs. Did you see any errors on the screen when Memtest was running? The errors show in red.

I didn't notice any errors, but I was afk because i was getting ready for work. I'll do a more comprehensive test in the afternoon on 2/8/11 as I will have some extra time between work and school.

Today while I was buying airline tickets I had an interesting crash where many of my devices failed at the same time just before the crash. I've uploaded a new dump in case it provides any new info.

    Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit
       #9

It does provide new information. The dump blames the Windows Direct X driver (most likely not the real cause) and points to a video card error.
Bugcheck 10E, VIDEO_MEMORY_MANAGEMENT_INTERNAL. Usual causes: Video driver, ?Video memory. BSOD Index.
There are a number of things that could affect this: a RAM problem, faulty video card (onboard chip), driver conflicts, hardware conflicts. How well does your computer run in the safe mode? Does it crash? Thar fact that you cannot successfully run Memtest leads me to think you have a hardware problem rather than a Windows problem.

I see that you have Accelerometer running. Are you overclocking your graphics card? If so return to default values. Though your Accelerometer driver is up to to date, Accelerometer has been know to cause conflicts. I suggest you uninstall to see if that helps your system. You can always reinstall it. Or you can rename Accelerometer.sys to Accelerometer.bak, reboot and the driver should not load. I have no idea if it is part of the problem; it is a shot in the dark.

    VIDEO_MEMORY_MANAGEMENT_INTERNAL (10e)
The video memory manager encountered a condition that it can't recover from. By crashing,
the video memory manager is attempting to get enough information into the minidump such that
somebody can pinpoint what lead to this condition.

I tried to reinstall windows 7 and I got a BSOD in the middle of the reinstall, so I tried it again and successfully reinstalled. I went to the manufacturers website and downloaded and installed all the drivers (with multiple BSOD along the way). Then I ran windows update and encountered more BSOD. Finally there were serveral driver updates from windows update that could not install because of errors. Reluctantly, I have resolved to return the machine.
