Windows 7: Blue screen 0x1000007e USA19H2k.sys

08 Feb 2011   #1

Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit
Blue screen 0x1000007e USA19H2k.sys

My wife's notebook crashed the other day with a blue screen and a stop code of 0x1000007e and the driver file usa19h2k.sys as the culprit. This is the first time its happened and if it were me I wouldn't be too worried about it this early on. But she is a court reporter and she uses her notebook for real time tranlastion of steno to plain text so she's concerned and I can appreciate why. The error happened while she was in getting set up in the courtroom. After restarting she was able to use everthing pretty much as normal. The driver file in question is for a usb to serial adapter used to connect her steno writing machine to her computer. We just want to know why it happened and what can be done to prevent it in the future because next time it might happen at a much more critical moment.

The notebook is an Acer Aspire AS1410 equipped with 2GB RAM and an Intel Core 2 Solo U3500 @ 1.4GHz. It's about 9 months old, shipped with Vista 32bit and did an in place upgrade to 7 immediately after recieving it. Have not reistalled the OS since. Updated to SP1 RTM about a week ago. The requisite files are attached.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi KTac and Welcome.

If it's a Part# USA-19HS there is a driver update for Windows 7 at TRIPP-LITE.
However, whether it is really Windows 7 compatible or not may be a mute point as the driver I've just looked at is dated October 2007. Over 18 months before Windows 7 was even "born"!! Might be worth a shot, but I'm thinking incompatible.

There's a long list of outdated or pre Windows 7 drivers in there as well. It may be one of those that caused the USA19H2k.sys to trip up.

I'd suggest going to the Laptop and Motherboard Mfr's. websites and updating any and all drivers offered.

Do not use Windows update or Device Manager to look after your drivers. Its known to "update" your drivers to "older" versions.
Do not have Windows update set to the Install update automatically (recommended) setting.

If you want a comprehensive list of drivers to look for, let me know......

This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is

Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit

Thanks fimble. I noticed the updated USA-19HS Windows 7 driver a few minutes after my initial post. I've already installed it and so far so good. I will check out the other updates you posted and keep you posted. Thanks again.

Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit

Sorry I've taken so long to follow up. So on the night of my last post I updated all drivers to the newest version available and removed most of the outdated drivers since they were mostly related to crapware preloaded by Acer that my wife never uses anyway. Everything has been rock solid stable since then. Thank you fimble for your help.

windows 7 ultimate

That's good to hear KTac and thanks for the feedback.

Now, after you've installed SP1 (and before if you're feeling pessimistic!!) would be a good time to create a back up image with something like Acronis True Image or Macrium Reflect (free).
