Event ID 6008

Every time I shutdown or restart on boot Event Viewer writes an administrative error in the log "Source: EventLog Event ID: 6008 The previous system shutdown at <time> on <date> was unexpected."

I do of course shut down properly, i.e... Start> Shutdown or Restart.

I've done a good deal of searching but, most of what I've found involves this error following a BSOD/Bug Check which I am not experiencing and after which of course this error would be expected.

I did find this Event ID 6008 is unexpectedly logged to the System event log after you shut down and restart your computer which seems to describe the problem and offers a hotfix but, does not apply to Windows 7. I can find no correlating hotfix for Windows 7.

The computer runs fine. I have no crashes or other problems and shut downs/restarts appear to happen in an orderly fashion. Had I not noticed it in the event log I wouldn't even be thinking about it.

System is a Dell Dimension 8400 3.2 Ghz. P4 w/ 4GB RAM (~3 useable) and ample disk space. Display adapter is an NVIDIA 8400 GS with the latest drivers. All other drivers are up-to-date and BIOS version is the latest available from Dell. Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit.

Basically I'm looking for someone who has a ready solution and short of that I'm inclined to ignore it as it does not appear to effect operation. You know how those red flags in Event Viewer tend to grate.

Ignore it 6008 has a huge number of possibilities including, heat, video drivers, faulty devices, failing HD's etc.

If it only does when YOU shut it down and never does it on its own chances are it may be something that isnt closing naturally and may be being "forced" to close. That would explain the unexpected shutdown"

Same problem for me - system seems to logoff/shutdown without problems - but then again nearly every day this event in the eventlog. No idea what is causing this. What I noticed, when ever this happens there are no shutdown events of the different regular services logged - so it looks like the computer was just shut off by the power button - which I definitly didn't do

Thanks Zig. I'm inclined to agree.

I was hoping for a "I had that here's what fixed it" type response just to get rid of the red flag in Event Viewer. You know how it is.

Like I said doesn't seem to effect operations at all so, C'est La Vie...

I have the exact same issue, started a couple of days ago.

I have this too. Noticed it a week ago and it started about month ago. No issues what so ever. Just wanted to check event panel and there was every time I start my PC.. "The previous shutdown was unexpected" blah blah blah. What could help? My computer is 100% stable and fully working.

I still have it after a full reinstall (I didn't reinstall because of that issue). It must be some 3rd party software I use.

No BSOD dump files in c:\windows\minidump...?

See if shuttubg down system via admin cmd/DOS prompt results in the same -
START | type cmd.exe | Right-click on cmd.exe above under "Programs" | select "Run as Administrator | paste the command -

I was just nosing around the Event Viewer and I'm seeing the same issue that datapod reported.
I haven't taken the time to see when it started but it wasn't an issue a few months ago.
It always shows up at the morning boot.
The only other issue I see is that, a few seconds before the shutdown error is reported I have the warning "Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet #2: The network link is down. Check to make sure the network cable is properly connected."
Since all my connections are wireless (and have been for 2 years) this is a meaningless warning.
My system is stable and runs quite well. Win7 Pro (64).
