Windows 7: win7 X64 pro bsod usb to serial port laptop

Hello,
I'm trying to get my laptop to talk to a garmin 126/8 GPS unit via a serial cable connected to a USB to serial port converter.
When I use the software designed to talk to Garmin, I experience the BSOD. If you have any advice or help that would be great.

These were all caused by hardware. Please read here to see what that means and what to try.
Your .dmp file shows a stop error of 0x124 which is a general hardware error .. A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint. Stop 0x124 minidumps contain very little practical information, and it is therefore necessary to approach the problem as a case of hardware in an unknown state of distress. The BSOD only appears when we are trying to use the usb to serial port converter. At all other times the laptop is stable and happy.

Running the built in memory tests and chkdsk is no problem, but the machien being a laptop makes more invasive troubleshooting techniques difficult.

I guess we should try the convertor (Usb2serial) in differnet usb ports? and maybe on a second laptop to try to establish whether it is some laptop component or the convertor (which seems most likely)

The only real option to do that though is another laptop which is the same make, model and age with the one experiencing the problem. If there is a laptop component fault how likley is it to have the same fault in the two items of the same make and model?
