Win 7 x64 BSOD on boot after first insert of headset
I've been using a new Windows 7 x64 Enterprise box for a couple of weeks - brand new HP hardware and OS installation from my employer's IT staff. It was working fine until the morning of March 2nd when I powered on for the first time that day and was greeted with a BSOD. Here is the stop message:
STOP: 0x0000007B (0xFFFFF880009A9928, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)
I had used the box all day on March 1st without a problem, and I can't recall making any change to the system state other than plugging in a Logitec headset (USB), which caused a small notification in the lower-right of my screen about drivers being configured (or something) for the new device. The headset worked beautifully and I had no idea that any trouble would result.
I spent the day yesterday (March 2) attempting to diagnose the trouble, but I haven't been able to pin it down. Here is the information that I have gathered so far:
Reverting to an earlier restore point (before March 1) did not help.
All boot options except Repair result in a BSOD (presumably the one I listed above).
The F8 boot option Enable Boot Logging does not produce a %SystemRoot%\ntdtlog.txt file as it should (as viewed through the cmd prompt within System Recovery Options).
The BSOD does not produce a %SystemRoot%\minidump\.
I've run CHKDSK /R on the system drive (C:\) and it revealed no significant errors. (It said something about some unallocated space being mistaken for file, but there was only one such error and the language made is appear to be innocuous.)
The Startup Repair log shows (after several attempts) "Root cause found" to be either:
"A recent driver installation or upgrade may be preventing the system from starting."
or
"SR has tried several times but still cannot determine the cause of the problem"
One other person seems to have encountered the BSOD after plugging in a headset for the first time, but they don't list a resolution.
Please reply if you can tell me how to diagnose and resolve this problem.
Thanks,
