    Question

Hi, I would like to ask if system freeze while in safe mode is an indication of hardware problem? I can reliably cause a system freeze just by running a virus scan (avast). My system would freeze a few minutes into the scan. Doing the same thing while in normal window mode also freezes my system. There's no bsod though.

Attempting to download a 2.7gb patch for BFBC2 quite consistently freezes my system about one third through the download . Playing YouTube videos sometimes does it as well. My system is about 1 year old, it started freezing up a few months back. I used to have 4gb ram on board (corsair ddr3 1333), now it's impossible to run my system with 4gb ram cos my system would freeze within minutes of boot up. I though it was faulty ram but replacing with a new pair of kingston ddr3 ram has the same result. I can't even run my system with a 2gb kingston ram so I switched back to my original corsair ddr3 ram.

MB is Asus P7P55D LE. You know the funny things, I can play a few rounds of BFBC2 without the system freezing up on me. While trying to post this tread my system freeze twice on me.

    Thanks.

Where did you get the patch from? Sounds like if it is the patch.
       Information
If just a freeze and reboot look in event viewer (type eventvwr in search) go to the windows log>application tab
Check for critical errors (they have red in the left column) that say app crash, app hang, or anything relating to the problem.
When you find them please note the event ID and source code and tell us what they are

The patch is from EA server so it's legit and safe.

Spotted a couple error that says application error and they all point to the same culprit.

Hi, welcome to the forums :)

It seems like the root cause may well be Avast since it freezes even wen just performing a scan. You may want to uninstall Avast and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials

Once you have swapped AV software, try downloading the patch again. My indication is that Avast is running a resident (albeit partial) scan of the file as it's being downloaded.

    Hope this helps

Thanks! Actually, I did just that a few days back and my system is still freezing. One thing though, it no longer freezes during a virus scan.

As for the EA game patch, I installed the game on my laptop, patched it (spent 3 hrs downloading it via a 2mb cable connection) and then copied the game files over to my PC. BFBC2 is now updated to the latest patch on my PC.

I'm trying to narrow down the cause of my system freeze. My suspicion is it's either a faulty MB or something to do with networking. Tried again to boot up the system using the new Kingston DDR3 ram but I couldn't get past the window startup screen.

Surfing the net always freeze the system. I'm using Google Chrome before it was Internet Explorer 8. Going to disable the onboard network card to see if I can get my system to freeze.

    Thanks for the advice though.

Disabled the onboard network card and I can still freeze the system (twice) by playing a video file and randomly jumping along the track.

In addition to the above, below are the different instances my system freeze today:
    1. countless times while surfing the net using Google Chrome.
    2. while using excel.
    3. while iTune is installing.
    4. while Java update is installing
    5. during window shutdown where it says it's installing updates.

    Thanks.
