    spontaneous crashes

my computer -- a Windows XP SP2 32 bit system -- is crashing repeatedly, and often. I have no idea why, and the problem has been getting progressively worse over the last 4 months. At this point my computer is almost unsuable aside from when I am in safe mode (which is where I am now).

In short, at seemingly random points my computer will emit a brief crunching sound from teh speakers, and then it will lock up hard. There's no disc access, no mouse movement, no nothing. Sometimes the fan will kick in and ramp up to approach the sound of a jet taking off. The only way I can recover is to pull the plug. Occasionally I would get BSODs, usually based in win32k.sys but I have not gotten one in 2-3 weeks now.

This problem has been quite intractable. I cannot seem to solve it to save my life. I have gotten help from a few sources, but they have not yet solved the issue. The main sources have been this thread and this more recent thread on a different forum.

I have been through virus scans, malware scans, memory tests, uninstalls, driver updates, reinstalls, thing after thing after thing. The problem remains: crunching sound, hard crash, even on the Windows logon screen. I'm okay in safe mode.

If anyone were willing to give some suggestions, review the thread above, or offer any help whatsoever, I would be exceedingly grateful. Thank you so much.

Hello and Welcome to the forums,

could you give me some more information that could shed some light upon what may be the real causer of your crashes:

    1) CPU-Z memory tab screenshot
    2) RamMon txt report
    3) crash files from C:\Windows\Minidump folder
    4) https://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html

sure, I'll give you all the information you want :)

    number one:
I went to the CPU-Z link you posted. Took me to a tool named PC Wizard. Couldn't use it; it gave me an error "Error installing peripherical [sic] driver. Err 1084" OK just dropes me out of the program. I didn't install it; I downloaded the ZIP, used WinRAR to unpack it and just ran that.

I already had a version of the program installed (1.56) and it tells me that the error code 0x43C (1084) occurred during initialization. There's an error displaying the log file. When I get into the program the Memory tab says that I've got 2048MB of memory. From the memory tests I've done, I know that's in 4 512MB sticks. I can't remember the other specs, though.

I should mention that I am running these programs in Safe Mode. I'll try again the next time I attempt regular mode.

    number two:
installed RamMon with no problems. Running it, however, the error is "Error: SPDINFO_INIT_DIRECTIO DirectIO.sys load error." This too is probably a result of running in Safe Mode; I will try in regular mode later.

    number three:
I attached the most recent Minidump file. I changed the extension from .dmp to .txt so as to allow uploading. There are 14 files in here. I should note that my system usually doesn't write a dump file; it doesn't have a chance to before it crashes.

    number four:
Again, I have gotten BSODs in the past but I have not seen one in two or three weeks. Usually I get the crunching noise and a total system lockup.

I will follow the instructions in the other BSOD Posting Instructions thread when I get back -- the system health and all that. I have to go out of town for a while and will take care of this later.

    Thanks for responding so quickly.

Sounds like you were running them in safe mode?

You could have simply zipped it.

The SF tool gives more information than just crash dumps. That's why I asked.

    KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000008e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
    happening.
    Arguments:
Arg1: c0000005, The exception code that was not handled
Arg2: bf9528d7, The address that the exception occurred at

The SF tool gives more information than just crash dumps. That's why I asked.
sorry, which one is the SF tool?

    BugCheck 1000008E, {c0000005, bf9528d7, aa5afc00, 0}
    Probably caused by : win32k.sys ( win32k!GreGetGlyphIndicesW+af )

    1. Uninstall Avast, StarForce, and update as many drivers as you can, try to update the drivers for all your devices.

    Such as,
    Analog Devices
    giveio.sys Wed Apr 03 22:33:25 1996

    Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet
    b57xp32.sys 2004

    Saitec
    SaiBus.sys unavailable (00000000)

    And others.
a lot of these drivers don't have entries in the Add/Remove programs table. I am loath to just remove them with no way of seeing if they have registry entries. However, I have found a tool that might allow me to turn them off selectively.

    2. Ensure that your RAM is supported by the motherboard and is set in the bios according to its rated specs.
This is the RAM that came with this machine. I have never added any to what it came with, and it ran for years without any problems. Last November I ran memtest86+ v4.10 and it had 10 passes with no errors. A few days ago I ran it again and this time it got through 16 passes with no errors.

I don't understand why you put the following in your post. The drivers listed, are those all the ones I should think about disabling or removing?

Arg2: bf9528d7, The address that the exception occurred at
    Arg3: aa5afc00, Trap Frame
    Arg4: 00000000

    1. From your reports I see you have 4 identical sticks of Micron Technology, which is very good. However, I have no idea what their current settings are. That's why I asked to attach your CPU-Z memory tab snip.

    2.
sorry, which one is the SF tool?

https://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html Also include BSOD (run the tool and click on "BSOD" button ) with this SF report.

This is the RAM that came with this machine. I have never added any to what it came with, and it ran for years without any problems. Last November I ran memtest86+ v4.10 and it had 10 passes with no errors. A few days ago I ran it again and this time it got through 16 passes with no errors.
Memtest does not always detect errors.

a lot of these drivers don't have entries in the Add/Remove programs table. I am loath to just remove them with no way of seeing if they have registry entries.
    Uninstall Avast and Starforce:
    Software Protection. Update Remove Driver
    avast! Uninstall Utility

Visit Dell support to update device drivers.

I found the relevant section of the PCwizard report and copied it. It's attached. Does that have the info you need? If not I can try to get the CPUZ screen shot.

I am not having BSODs but I will attempt to get you this information.

then what's the best way of ferreting out memory errors?

I should no longer have StarForce on my machine. I uninstalled it about a week ago. To check, I downloaded the removal utility, which told me I had no protection drivers found to remove. I have no PROTECT.EXE file as suggested in another section of that page, UNLESS it is on my external drive (which is disconnected when I am in safe mode)

Are you seeing indications that it is still installed? If so, let me know what the file names are and I will smoke them manually.

I'll unoinstall avast! in a moment.

It'll take you no effort to take this screenshot, please do so since PCWizard does not give me the necessary information:

There is no best way as such, and I'm not talking about the memory errors. It is your current RAM settings I'd like to see.

Its drivers still get loaded in RAM each time you start your PC:

    Code:
    prodrv06 prodrv06.sys Mon Aug 09 07:29:26 2004 (41176016)

okay. Sorry I've been so long in replying; real life got pretty busy there for a while.

I uninstalled avast! using the tool from their website.

I used the standard MS search tool to look for the StarForce files prodrv06.sys, prosync1, prohlp02. None of these files were found. I downloaded the StarForce removal tool again, and it reported that no protection drivers were found. If you have any ideas for anywhere else they might be hiding on my machine, I'd love to know :)

I have not been able to get the CPUZ screenshot you wanted. Keep crashing in regular mode. But I did get the information off of the memory tab. I am using version 1.56 of the program. It says I have:
    -- 2048 MB RAM
    -- type: DDR2
    -- Channels: Dual
    -- DRAM frequency: 266.0 MHz
    -- FSB : DRAM: 3:4
    -- CAS# Latency 4.0 clocks
    -- RAS# to CAS# delay: 4.0 clocks
    -- RAS# Precharge: 4 clocks
    -- Cycle Time: 12 clocks

    hey there --

I think I found a way to get you a screenshot if that's really what you want. Let me know, as it's a bit of a pain in the neck.
