    PLEASE HELP, UNKNOWN BSOD

So I was attempting to format a Hitachi laptop hard drive by plugging it into an external hd case and connecting it via usb to my laptop. It was recognized as a cd drive and i couldnt format it, but i remembered being told that sometimes the drive letters have a conflict and changing them might help. I changed the *original* cd/dvd drive to L and the hd i was attempting to format to E. After a reboot, my laptop loaded to the "starting windows" screen then BSOD so quickly I had no hope of seeing the info. I cannot logon to windows and am currently attempting Startup Repair to if it can be fixed that way. I tried to use System Restore but got an error that the restore point could not be loaded. The laptop in question is a Compaq CQ-60, running Windows 7 32 bit, upgraded from Vista. W7 was reinstalled in October 2010 (i realized later that was unnecessary) when I had problems with software conflict. The computer was purchased new in Oct. 2009

Intel Pentium Dual Core T4200 2GHz
    3GB RAM
    Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD

Please, any help is appreciated, Startup Repair has been running about 10 mins and nothing yet, is this normal? If any other info is needed, let me know, I can't get into the computer, but if I remember, I'll provide it.

Well startup repair deals with the bootmgr not being found. This typically is only a fix if no boot occurs at all. How far into the start up process are you getting before it locks up again?

Have you tried booting in safe mode?

It loads to the black "Starting Windows" screen with the glowing windows logo, then goes to the bsod. Same thing when attempting to start in safe mode. It is really frustrating that I cannot see the error code because it happens so quickly.

EDIT- Is it okay to 'force' a shutdown (hold power button) while it is in startup repair? I want to attempt system restore again, but i cant cancel the startup repair.

Sorry to say startup repair is not going to solve that problem, it only deals with fixing the bootmgr which is apparently working if you are able to get as far as the windows post.

Have you tried multiple system restore points? It's possible the one you tried was bad for some reason.
If you haven't recently made any significant changes to the system, I'm guessing failing hard drive or viral issue here.
At this point it's just a guess, what we really need is the minidump file from the crash to identify the problem but we need to get you into safe mode for that step.

You may also want to check the hard drive for errors.

I will try another restore point. Could I have messed something up when I changed the volume letters? The hard drive I was attempting to format is no longer here, (it was a friends) but I can get it back if I will need it. Thank you for all your help here, I know my way around computers a bit, but when it comes to technical things such as this I'm lost!

A drive letter change could be an issue for software located on the drive. I don't think it would result in safe mode not working when the system is still apparently able to locate the windows folder to start the boot process though.

Okay, I am attempting System Restore from an alternate restore point. I have my camera ready to try and catch the bsod this time, if it happens again. I will attempt to get into safe mode again if necessary after all this.

if it is successful I want you to start safe mode with networking so you can upload directly from the computer in question and follow the directions here.

Ok it was unsuccessful. It says: "System restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point. Source: %SystemRoot%\registration Destination: ComPlusStaging.

I'm going to attempt to restart in Safe Mode now.

Before restarting, I decided to do a memory diagnostic test to see if anything useful would show up. Will update as soon as all is done. Thanks again for the help

Memory check showed nothing out of sorts, still cannot load in safe mode

Would disabling windows from restarting on errors let me get into safe (or normal) mode?

Also, since I cant get into safe mode or start windows normally at this point, would a full format/reinstall of windows be my best option? Is there a way to retrieve the files on my computer before this?

EDIT- SUCCESS! Booted in "last known good configuration" and i am now logged into windows in normal mode.

No I'm pretty certain you are dealing with a software/driver/hard drive issue ...apparently a very serious one at that.

I'm going to point a more experienced user here for you I'm sure there's a tutorial on this site that will solve your problem for you, I'm just not aware of it apparently.
Please be patient for a bit he's a busy guy I'm sure he'll drop by as soon as he has a moment.

edit: I haven't given up on getting you back into your current installation just yet.
You can reinstall windows while saving the files in your documents, I'm still holding that as a final step after we've exhausted other options though.
