Blue Screen of Death ATI Problem?

I sometimes get BSODS with my computer when I leave it on for a long time and the laptop is idle like when I go to sleep. Using BlueScreenViewer I found out that the BSOD is caused by two drivers. Atikmdag.sys and ntoskrnl.exe

Im using a Dell Studio 1458 with the specs
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
Intel(R) Core(Tm) i7 Cpu Q740
ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5450

COuld anyone provide me assisstance?

Just to confirm your apparent thought it does seem to be the ati driver kernel crashing.
ntoskrnl.exe is just a general crash message you get it from all sorts of things. Apparently in this case your ati driver.

The drivers they have listed on dell's site don't seem to have ever been updated. Sadly with the mobility versions of graphics cards you can't be sure if you can use the one released by ati or not, you just have to try.'s also possible the digital tuner is causing issues with the ati card.

First thing I would suggest is completely wiping the current ati driver off of there.
Here is a good utility for that. Guru3D - Driver Sweeper (Setup) download from

Before running that make sure you have a copy of the driver they offer here.
Drivers & Downloads
as well as the newer driver provided by amd/ati
ATI Catalyst

After using the tool to remove the currently present driver I would first try using the ATI provided one, only having the one from dell as a fall back incase it doesn't work properly.

An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is usually
caused by drivers using improper addresses.
If a kernel debugger is available get the stack backtrace.

As I said though, it's also possible the graphics and the digital tuner are conflicting, causing the irq issue. This is more of a hardware based problem if it's the case.

Unfortunately dell doesn't bother with patches unless a quarter of a million people complain about a problem.
Hopefully the steps I gave you above will help resolve it for you.
Odds are you will return with a more recent dump after this step though.
I have this feeling ati is just taking the fall for either the wireless streaming or the digital tuner devices.

Driver dump info follows just for reference.

unfortunately, even after I tried your approach, my laptop is unable to detect the new graphics driver. Is this a compatibility issue or something? any workarounds?

The driver from dell should work either way, it's supposedly specifically for that device on that laptop.

Please remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%. They use a driver, found in your dmp, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs. Use this SPTD uninstaller when you're done: DuplexSecure - Downloads
You can use MagicDisc as an alternative.

Turns out its not BSODs anymore, its juz unexpected shutdowns as in screen turns black, power dies...I'm afraid it is a hardware problem. What do you guys think? Any system problems can cause unexpected shut downs lyk dat?

Hmm to be honest I dun think it is an overheating issue as I could stress my laptop while playing COD6 and doing other heavy issues such as Java programming with no problem. Its just when I leave it idle for a long time that it shuts down. How would I upload a report? Is it not the files that i uploaded on the first post using the tools provided on the BSOD Posting Instructions Thread?
