Creeping Loss of OS Services
I built my new computer in February 2011, while keeping my old computer for Web browsing. My new computer is not connected to the Internet unless I unplug the cable from my old computer and move it to my new computer. So, I don't get very many updates on my new computer.
I managed to network my old and new computers together by setting the IP addresses and subnet masks on unused networking ports. This worked for a few days, then, day by day, the computers stopped seeing more and more of each others folders, until they simply stopped talking to each other completely.
I get occasional messages that USB ports have malfunctioned. I got a message a few days ago saying that my motherboard's hard drive driver failed to load. Another message informed me that a power surge had taken place on a USB port for a device that was not turned on.
I mostly use my new computer to edit photos in Adobe Photoshop CS4 64-bit. I discovered last night that if I create a new layer and use smart blur on it, Photoshop will lock up if I attempt to load another photo at any time before I close the current photo. I suspect this is an OS issue.
Edit: I forgot to mention that Alt-F4 often does not do anything when I attempt to close applications. I have to click on the "X" or go through the menu.
Does anyone have any suggestions for closing out these issues?
Thank you
