WMP crashes when opening AVI files

The headline pretty much says it all, here's some background on my PC's hardware, software and the error details follow. Hope someone can help figure it out.

Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit (only started doing this after the switch to x64)
AMD Athlon64X2 @2.2GHz
nVidia 8400GS 512MB PCI-e graphics card (driver version 6658)

Real player
Nero 7 Ultra
VLC media player
ConvertX to DVD
DVD shrink
