Windows 7: Frequent BSOD

Frequent BSOD help

Hello,

I keep getting repeated blue screens with various error messages (stop 0x1E and 0xA are the most common, but I've also had others eg. 0x3B, 0x50, 0x24). It started blue screening a while back, once a day or less, but recently it has been happening almost constantly. My computer will usually work for around 5 minutes before BSOD, and I can see no correlation to what I am doing on it at the time. I also don't think the BSOD started happening after I installed anything, but I can't be sure.

I have tried systematically taking out each memory stick, and even 2 memory sticks at a time, to see if it is that. I have tried doing a few system restores to times before it got this bad, and I also tried re-installing the BIOS from disc. It doesn't give me enough time to complete a virus scan (or much else for that matter), but I have had AVG installed on the computer fo quite a while now.

It's like looking for a needle in a haystack and I could do with some direction! I have attached the dmpfiles.

Thanks.

EDIT: managed to run an anti-virus scan with Avast, it found some viruses and corrupted files and fixed them, then promptly blue-screened again. Error stop 0x1A MEMORY_MANAGEMENT.

Hi Elipsis,

There's a rootkit that's been doing the rounds since December that shows itself through blue screens with usually a IRQ not less or equal stop code. It usually blames the iastor.sys driver as the cause.
It starts by blue screening/freezing on random programs, then when booting to Normal Mode, then when you try to boot to Safe Mode. Eventually it will allow no access whatsoever.

If this sounds familar, Download TDSSKiller and run it in Safe Mode. Just to rule out the rootkit.
As long as you can keep Safe Mode open for 30 seconds or so it should be enough to run TDSSKiller and remove the rootkit.

AVG is known to be a cause of BSOD's on Windows 7 systems. Suggest that you uninstall it. Download the correct AVG Remover for your system (32 or 64 bit).
If you have AVG ID protection installed, download the AVGID Protection Remover from the above link as well (it wouldn't hurt to download and run it anyway). Download Microsoft Security Essentials as its replacement. Re-boot to Safe Mode. In Safe Mode run the AVG Removal tools. Re-boot to normal mode and install MSE. Make sure your Windows firewall is enabled!

I'll look at your dump files and will update this post shortly.

***UPDATE***

STOP 0x0000001E: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
Usual causes:
Device driver, hardware, System service, compatibility, Remote control programs, memory, BIOS

Your latest dump file lists ntkrnlmp.exe as the probable cause. This is a Windows System file and for it to be the cause of your crash is highly unlikely.
Old and incompatible drivers can and do cause issues with Windows 7, often giving false error codes.

Be aware that Avast! doesn't have a very good record with Windows 7 if you've downloaded and installed it(Was thinking Avira). While Blue Screening you'll be far better off with MSE

Thanks, I managed to complete a full scan with avast and found and removed a rootkit. I have completely removed AVG now too. It seems more stable now, but it has crashed once since removing the rootkit and other viruses.

Thanks, I did the TDSSKiller and it found and cured a problem, and I'm just going through your other suggestions now. Fingers crossed!

I've removed the rootkit, uninstalled Gigabyte Energy Saver, and updated the drivers. My computer is more stable now, but it did crash again, minidump attached. The error code on BSOD was something to do with memory management again.

Good work.

Agree that for testing it is a good idea to remove any Anti-virus and use MSE for testing purposes.

I haven't seen Avast causing problems with Windows 7, which doesn't mean it never has.
It is recommended by many members on this forum, I use MSE and Avast on different computers and haven't had problems with either.

YMMV

I'm retracting that comment. Thanks Dave76. I was thinking of Avira.

Hi Elipsis

First an apology. You'll be OK with Avast! when done, I was thinking of Avira.
Good job on the driver updating/removal as well!!

STOP 0x0000001A: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT
Usual causes:
Device driver, memory, kernel

Your latest dump file lists ntkrnlmp.exe as the probable cause. This is a Windows System file.

As a Priority:

There are some AVG drivers still on your system which will not help stability.
AVGIDSEH.Sys
avgldx64.sys
avgmfx64.sys

Did you run the removal tool, preferably in Safe Mode?
AVG Removal Tools

Memory_Management usually means drivers or your RAM/RAM settings are mismatched or incorrect.
Make sure your Ram is set to the default (no overclocking) settings.

Outdated/Old Drivers to update:

Although you updated the RTWin64 driver, if you follow the Realtek links provided below you'll get the very latest. There isn't a problem with the one you have but it's always (?) better to have the latest available drivers.

Have you been checking your temperatures?

Use Real Temp for Intel CPU orCore Temp for AMD CPU , run one of these and check the CPU temps when at idle, under load and/or testing.
Let us know the minimum and maximum temps you get.

Go to your BIOS and tell us what the CPU, RAM and North Bridge (NB) or integrated memory controller voltages are.
North Bridge (NB) or integrated memory controller depending on your system.
