The hard drive came up clean. I talked to a friend that built a computer too and he said that his had trouble with windows 7 before and it slowly went away. Mine appears to have stopped blue screening...at least for a couple of days...what else could it be?

    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

ebaumgardner81, I suspect you have no reason to worry about faulty components. I am a full-time, experienced, certified PC tech and have been dealing with this recurrent critical kernel-power error for some time, with varying success. I currently have it occurring on two Win 7 systems, one Home Premium and one Ultimate. Basically, what happens is that the screen randomly (and occasionally) goes blank for a second or two, then the video resets. The Home Premium system I'm using seems to fight with certain video resolution settings, and they may change when this all happens. It was reported to me by the primary user that the Ultimate system was also sometimes locking the system up during the reset, and I see some reports of a BSOD associated with it, as well.

I'm still working on this problem; don't have a solid resolution at this point, but will post if and when I do. I DO have some info about it that may interest you, though. This video resetting in Windows 7 is common and well-documented, which you may be aware of. It happens on all different PC makes and models, and NVidia and ATI graphics cards alike.

I have done considerable research and find these ideas: The reset problem occurs in Windows 7 because Windows "monitors" the video system. When Windows decides the video device or driver has taken "too long" to perform a certain function, it then tries to "take over," and resets the video (this is when the screen goes temporarily blank, I believe). This function logs as a "critical" error in the system logs, kernel-power.

Microsoft says to check for updated video drivers, and keep an eye out for one if you don't find it right away. (To me, this means "if we decide to fix it, we will, and we'll let you know.") I have tested changing the system power settings to different things from the default, and this doesn't appear to help consistently, but you may try it. I am also experimenting with different video resolution settings on the Home Premium PC, and some settings seem to make the problem occur far less often than others. The Home Premium setup will sometimes reset and leave the image on the screen shifted a half-inch to the left or right, too (!?)

Keep your operating system updated, back up your valuable info, run Scan Disk utility from within Windows, and keep the system in as good running condition as you can. If I were dealing with BSOD fairly regularly, I'd be doing other things, but the two systems I mention that I'm dealing with are very healthy otherwise, from all indications.

I hope this helps, but I can't promise that when I find something that helps me, it will help anyone else! I will keep you advised, though. Will be working on the problem some this weekend. I am very confident of my "diagnosis" thus far, and wanted to save you from spending more time/money worrying about faulty components.

If anyone takes any action on the basis of my words, I cannot accept responsibility for any perceived damage that may occur. You do so at your own risk! I want to help, but cannot advise anything about a computer system I have not personally examined.
