BSOD, Stop: c000021a fatal system error

Dear Support,

I have a Sony Vaio VPCZ1 laptop which has been working great up until yesterday. I now have the following problems:

- When choosing to boot normally I get BSOD; STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000000 (0xc0000001 0x001008c8)
The system has been shutdown

- When I run the Repair utility, I get "Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically"

- The problem signature is:
Event Name: Startuprepairoffline
Signature 1: 6.1.7600.16385
Signature 2: 6.1.7600.16385
Signature 3: unknown
Signature 4: 21200853
Signature 5: Autofailover
Signature 6: 18
Signature 7: NoRootCause

- System Restore fails with my only restore point with "an unspecified error occured during system restore (0x8000ffff)"

- When I try to run sfc /scannow I get "There is a system repair pending which requires a reboot to complete. Restart windows and run sfc again"

Please can you assist? I have considered the option to use the repair install option. I have seen the warnings and would like to confirm the following:
  1. Will all the profile information will be kept intact, photos, music, outlook files, etc?
  2. What are the impacts, caveats for performing this task? What should I backup first?
  3. Can I copy the profile using User Migration Tools, or the command prompt?

Thanks for your help,

1 - all info "should" be left intact.
2 - try everything else that you can before trying a repair install. Then next step if a repair install doesn't work is a wipe and reinstall.
3 - you cannot "restore" the user profile - you'll only have the data from it, and you can copy that to a new profile if you need to.

Can you get into Safe Mode (try tapping F8 just before the Windows splash screen appears)?

BSOD - Installation Repair only available from a windows-based launch

Thanks for the replies so far.

I cannot use any of the F8 options because Safe Modes (tried All 3 Safe Modes, last known good, debugging mode) will just come back to the BSOD. The last shown driver is CLASSPNP.SYS before the BSOD.

As I cannot I get into Windows, I tried to run the installation from the DVD, but I got the message "The computer started using the Windows Installation Disk. Remove the installation disk and restart your computer so that windows starts normally. Then, insert the disk and restart the upgrade."

So does this means I have no option - I have to reformat the drive?

Luckily the Command Prompt in the Repair console allows me to use Robocopy to copy the data to my external USB drive. I am now Virus scanning the external drive in my other PC. Nothing bad found so far.

Please reply, as I will not take any more action until I receive a response.

Many Thanks,
