    EliteBook being pretty stable sometimes but with BSODs othertimes

    Hello everyone,

    I've got an

    HP EliteBook 8540w
    Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit college upgrade (upgraded from Win7 Home 32-Bit OEM)
    The PC and its hardware is from October 2010. I upgraded my RAM with 8GB extra to a total of 12GB RAM:

    I got several BSODs; usually I get the PFN_LIST_CORRUPT error, but sometimes Memory Management Error, and recently a Registry Error.

    I checked my Registry with Wise Registry Cleaner, but no errors were found. Also I ran Windows Memory Diagnostics and it turned out okay a well. I know I should try Mem Test, to be absolutely certain that it's not the new RAM I bought that could be the issue, but I haven't done that as of yet.

    Win7 runs with HP Assistant, which sometimes fails to load. I do sometimes get problems running Firefox, and the internet connection can suddenly disconnect, though I haven't got any problems of the latter lately (the Wireless driver seems to fail).

    In November these regular BSODs started to arise, and so I formatted my Laptop and reinstalled everything. I think I didn't have any problems for a month, but then it started yet again.

    Please help me.

    Hi -

    The new 2x4 GB RAM is a different speed than the original 2x2 GB. RAM is mis-matched -
    2x2 = 1333 MHz
    2x4 = 1067 MHz

    You have old version AVG installed. Remove it - AVG Removal - sysnative.com - MVP

    Reboot upon completion. Install MSE - http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

    I suggest that you RMA the new RAM.

    I don't know how to RMA the RAM, so I went to a computer store, and told all about this. He checked the RAM with memtest, and according to him, who I trust, he didn't find any errors. It would be a software issue, according to him.

    Back at home, I wiped out my HD partition of windows and its contents, used HP recovery, all which went fine. But then already after letting MSE check the PC, I got my first BSOD (Code 24).

    As the shop didn't do a full test of memtest, I decided to do it. Within the hour, I believe withing 20 minutes, I got errors. If he swears he didn't find one, then I don't know how this can happen. I let it run through to the night, but when I woke up, I saw that the test got 'stuck' at 2 hours and 40 or so minutes, reporting error after error, counting over 8 million errors!

    One thing I thought could be the problem, is that I plugged it in here, while at the store it ran on the battery. I actually find it weird and not an explainable reason, but it's the only thing that is different from testing it here, and at the store.
    ... Well, I tested it with version 4, I don't know what the store used, and one other reason I could find is that it's getting very hot here on the table it stands; it might be cooler at the shop.

    Anyway, I ran memtest without the modules, but with the memory already installed only, and then I got this strange result:

    Is this normal? Or is this a bad thing also? Because, if it is, then it might be the motherboard? Do know, I didn't mention that, that the day I bought these new RAM, I dropped my PC. I can't remember if I had it on or not; the zipper of the sleeve was broken, which caused it to fell out, which was my own fault, as I didn't put all the straps on the case. I didn't let it finish the test, as I couldn't grasp what it was doing anymore.

    Thanks.
