Windows 7: BSOD on Sleep/Hibernate - random

BSOD on Sleep/Hibernate - random

Hi,
I hope I have done this right!
I have a Dell Studio XPS 1647, bought new about 1 year ago. I have not reinstalled the OS, which is OEM Windows 7 Professional, x64, but it is fully updated.
The hardware has not been modified - processor is Intel i5, M540 @ 2.53 GHz. It has 8gb RAM.
Although the System Health Report says no anti-virus, I am running Avira Premium Suite.
I'm getting random BSODs on hibernating or sleep. Can't identify any cause, but it's been happening for about 5 months.
Thanks for any help!

hi ortho and welcome to SF
It looks like those crashes occured ever since you got that computer (the oldest dmp is from May16th 2010)
All crashes(except 3 old ones) point at bcmwl664.sys as a probable cause. That's your Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter - Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card driver.
you could try to get an updated driver here: Broadcom.com - Downloads & Support

But there is also a chance of Avira causing the problems
I suggest if the driver update doesn't solve the problem you remove Avira with this tool
Avira AntiVir Removal Tool - Download
and replace it with this one for the time being

Thanks!!

Thank you for this. It's very frustrating for a computer amateur - this is really helpful.
If the BSODs are dating back to May 2010, I guess it shouldn't be Avira, since I only bought that in August. However, I will try both suggestions.
Again - I really appreciate this help!

Fixed - I think

There was no newer Broadcom driver, but I reinstalled the same one anyway. That didn't help - another BSOD.

So I contacted Dell (under warranty). They advised "updating" a BIOS driver, network driver and 'System Software'. I downloaded these - only the BIOS was new, but I installed all 3 anyway.

Since then, no BSODs - so I hope it's fixed.

Thanks.

Murphy's Law

So, after posting that I had 2 weeks BSOD-free what happened? You guessed! Pushed the Sleep button and went to bed.
This morning - there's the BSOD!!
Now to see if it's a one-off, or back regularily.
Cheers!

Nope - not solved.

Return of the random BSODs. I'm back on to Dell support. They suggested a System Restore, but I don't have any older than 10 days ago, for some reason.

When I tried a safe mode restore to that date, guess what? A BSOD during System Restore! WTF?

Now waiting any further help!

Cheers.

Problem not solved - New files attached

Help, please.

Long story short, I have a new HDD and have reinstalled everything from scratch, but still getting BSODs. I have attached the new zip file.

More detail -
  • Dell Support decided that the problem was the HDD - even though the full test showed no errors?
  • They told me to back up, and a new HDD was sent.
  • I installed this, and restored the disk image.
  • BSODs continued, so I formatted the new HDD and reinstalled everything (fun!).
  • Seemed Ok for a couple of days, but as I added back more stuff, random BSODs again.
  • I have tried to associate them with something, but can't put my finger on it. My latest suspect was Utorrent, so I switched to Vuze. These were running when I had my latest 2 BSODs.
System is still the same as when I first posted, just a new HDD, and many wasted hours!

Cheers
