Problems when shutting down the computer (or heavy resource usage)

    Hi all,

After 3 reliable years, my computer has become very unreliable.

There are 2 times when the BSODs occur:

    - Whenever I try to shut down or restart the computer, A BSOD will occur at the *final* shutdown screen ("Shutting Down"). The BSOD message is "Internal Power Error". When I try to enter the computer into sleep mode, the screen turns black but hangs indefinitely. In this circumstance, sleep mode does not occur, nor does a BSOD occur.

    - BSODs also occur randomly when I'm using the computer. The heavier the resource usage, the higher the likelyhood of a BSOD. They do not occur when the computer is idle.

    Cause:

The problems started last week when AVG (antivirus) quarantined & deleted some threats. I do not recall the files or locations they were in.

    Computer:

Compaq C762NR laptop, 3 years old
Windows 7 32 bit retail, installed 2 years ago
Original OS was Vista 32 bit
    OS has never been reinstalled

    Prior to these problems:

The computer used to run cool (except under momentary high resource usage) & was very reliable with BSODs being a very rare occurance (and they would not repeat).

    Now

The computer is usually warm to the touch, and the fan runs more often & is noticeably louder.

2 of the roughly 20 crashes have forced Windows to run "Startup Repair" (successfully). After each occurence I noticed my normally blue taskbar occasionally turn grey and had the style of the Windows 95 taskbar. It is not doing this currently.

I have attached the system files as instructed, Thank you for your time!

    Hello,

Run the Kaspersky TDSSKiller: How to remove malware belonging to the family Rootkit.Win32.TDSS (aka Tidserv, TDSServ, Alureon)?

    Code:
    Rtnicxp.sys Mon Jan 22 22:01:00 2007 (45B57A6C)
If the BSODs persist, run driver verifier: Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

Install SP1: Learn how to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

    Hello,

Glad to hear the BSODs have stopped. If you could upload a new jcgriff2 report, we may be able to get more info on the SP1 failure.

Ok, I was able to install it after Windows anti-malware utility found and corrected the issue. Thanks again! I'm so grateful for your help; I thought I would have to pay a computer repair shop $95 to fix this (They claimed it was a hardware issue but refused to tell me specifically what. That made me suspicious enough not to bite)

They did a diagnostic but didn't actually fix the problem? I can see where they are coming from I guess; they did the work of looking at the system (or so they claimed), and if they told you that the RAM was bad, for example, you could just replace the RAM and not have to pay them.

Or they could have been pulling your leg...we'll never know! In any case, I'm glad the system is up and running and didn't cost you a dime.
