Solved Black screen crash & restarts, no BSOD

New member
Hi,

My laptop crashs quite regular, black screens and restarts randomly. I used to think it was heat related but the laptop doesn't really get hot. Idles at 38c.

There are no crash dump files at all, i've configured windows to not restart in the event of a crash and to generate a crash dump file. I've also installed a fresh install of windows 7 with only the manufactors drivers and windows updates.

I'm going to upload my system information with the hope that someone can shed some light on this.

Are you still having the issues after formatting? I don't see anything that pops out in your logs. However, I do see that there are a lot of failed Windows updates.

Try running the System Update Readiness Tool and see if it fixes the problem.
Download details: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [February 2011]

Once you've installed all the updates, you will need to update to SP1 - Learn how to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Hi,

thanks for the reply. Had to do a clean install again, could not update at all even with the System Update Readiness Tool.

I now have an up to date os with MSE installed. I've also updated the drivers like you said but i have had a black screen (which i had to do a hard reset) and a restart.

Two of the driver verified dumps blamed your Intel processor driver. Did you select only the 3rd party, non-microsoft, drivers?

The third one blamed your Athero's network driver. I would like for you to download the latest from here
ATHEROS drivers for Microsoft Windows. Uninstall your current device. Make sure you choose the option to remove the drivers. Reboot your computer and then reinstall the latest that you just downloaded.

Please run these tests and report back the results
1. Memtest86 - Run for 7-8 passes - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html
2. Prime95 - Run all three tests for 3-4 hours each or until fail - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/100352-cpu-stress-test-prime95.html
3. Hard drive scan usings SeaTools - SeaTools for Windows | Seagate - Both long and short tests

No, the drivers installed for the processor are the ones from mircosoft. The other drivers i have installed are the chipset drivers from intel that are from the manufacturers website.

Should i disable verifier.exe before doing these tests? or won't it affect them?

Thanks for your help :D

Ok will do, also i have already updated the wireless driver from their website. The most up to date driver isn't digitally signed, and windows 7 does not seem to like it at all. So i'm going to try a previous one which i hope is signed!

I have just finished the blend (ran for 7 hours) test which was a pass. I will do the Large FFTs on sunday.

I forgot to tell you that i was not home for the first blue screen and the laptop was not on. My girlfriend turned on my xbox to was a dvd using the xbox remote and that woke up the laptop via the cir. Is that what caused the bsod (netio.sys)?

Ok just to make sure i am doing it correctly here are the files i have from compal. I was going to burn it to a cd as last time i did it from usb.

I was just following this guide
Bios-boot-cd - Howto: BIOS-Update per bootable CD (Method I) - www.biosflash.com
but when i selected cd rom from the boot menu it came up with intel ethernet contoller. So how would you update my bios with these files?

Not to sure about this one. Are you sure you created a bootable CD? What do you mean it came up with your ethernet controller? Have you tried changing the boot order in the BIOS?
