BSOD on Asus Laptop - help!

    Hello everyone,

First post - wish it could be under different circumstances

I have had this Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Asus K52J laptop for just over a year, and unfortunately of late I have been a victim of BSOD. The frequency of these have increased over the last few weeks, and I have had enough.

These BSOD's tend to happen when I am web browsing, watching a youtube video, or browsing folders (I have noticed that sometimes it happens when I right-click files, folders, etc...)

This is my work laptop and I have a lot of important documents (which I of course backup) which I don't wish to lose or have corrupted due to these BSOD's.

Any help in this matter is MUCH appreciated!!

I have attached the necessary files outlined here - https://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html

    Some System Specs:

    • x64
    • OEM Windows 7 (original OS)
    • I have not reinstalled/formatted since I purchased this machine

If I have neglected to include any information, please let me know and I will do my best to provide it.

Just wondering what the cause of this could be and what steps I can take to stop this from happening entirely or prevent these from occurring as frequently as they are (happened 3 times today ).

    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi homerjoe and welcome to SF

    2 crashes are blamed on
    Code:
    atikmdag.sys Tue Sep 28 21:41:26 2010 (4CA29946)
    (your video driver)
try to update it here AMD Graphics Drivers & Software
    3 crashes are blamed on
    Code:
    athrx.sys Mon Oct 05 12:33:57 2009 (4ACA1FF5)
    (your network driver)
You might find a better fitting driver here Atheros Communications

another important step to make your system stable:
Learn how to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Since 2 crashes might be the result of overheating, are your temperatures OK? check them with Real Temp - CPU temperature monitoring or with Core Temp

And just to cover the bases, do a full scan with this

Thanks so much for taking time out of your day to help me out, I really appreciate it.

I've gone and updated both my WLAN and my display drivers.

I have also installed RealTemp 360.

I am in the process of updating my windows 7 to SP1.

I was just wondering what temperatures I should be looking for which would be considered dangerous or otherwise unhealthy for my system. All of my crashes have been during web browsing and not during any sort of gaming or anything which I would consider to be GPU or CPU intensive.

    Thanks again! :)

You're very welcome. Judging from the facts so far, it might well be that temperature plays a big role in this.
I have no experience with Intel mobile CPUs but I've been told that they run hotter than their AMD counter parts. So I can only judge from common sense and say anything above 70C is probably undesirable. Considering the age of your computer, you might want to go to your local office supply store and pick up a few cans of air. Completely evacuate all cooling vents of dust, pay extremely close attention to the ones that feed air to the CPU heatsink. (I have to clean out my desktop about every 6 month...and boy does it collect dust :) Not sure if you can get there...the best would be blowing out all dust from the heatsink fins and the fan blades as well.
