Windows 7: A Few BSOD's and a lot of frequent resets.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
A Few BSOD's and a lot of frequent resets. (Solved)

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Dell l501x
Original Installed OEM OS
Had the computer for 3 Months and OS was never reinstalled

I have had a few random resets when running particular programs, namely XBM and a few others. Have recently had a lot of these resets when running graphically intensive applications (screensaver, installing older games, newer games install and run for hours fine). I have recently started to get BSOD's and the resets have become more frequent. I had initially thought the problem was bad ram and started a few memory tests that all came back fine. I then did a few hard drive checks that also came back fine. Oddly I have never had a reset while using the computer, only when it has been left idle for at least ten minutes.

I no longer see what the problem could be and my only thought is that the video card is starting to have problems.

Hi ripsometime and welcome to SF
Both your crashes come back as
which points to overclocking/overheating or graphics card error.
But before you do anything else let's eliminate the biggest candidate for crashes first:
sptd.sys Sun Oct 11 16:55:14 2009 (4AD24632)
(Part of your Alcohol 120% installation) get the tool for de-installation here DuplexSecure - FAQ
As a more uncritical substitute I recommend
Freeware MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM(MagicDisc) Overview
or perhaps
SlySoft Virtual CloneDrive

If you overclocked, take that back for the time being.
I've seen you have Core-Temp...on an Intel machine Real Temp - CPU temperature monitoring might be working better. But that's no big deal as long as you keep the temps in check.

If it comes down to the Graphics card, de-install the drivers with Guru3D - Driver Sweeper or with - Driver Sweeper
and find the correct drivers here Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

Thank you for the quick reply, I have uninstalled the spdt driver and alcohol 120% (although unhappy about that, lol)

I will try the replacements for this soon.

I do not over-clock and haven't modified the system since i got it so it should be all stock, if it is a temperature problem then i must be getting wrong information from either the internet or speed-fan because it always shows "normal temperatures" for a laptop graphics card.

If the sptd was the problem then it should clear up soon and i wont need any further help but ill keep the thread open for the next couple of days to see if the resets continue. If they do i will try your next steps to solve the problem.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

Well, our good old friend the BSOD had arrived again with the same error message as before "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". After the memory dump I quickly started up the bios setup expecting to be able to check the GPU temperature from there, it turns out it can't be done or i don't know how.

When i got windows started again i used speedfan (real temp was not showing my GPU temp) to check the GPU temp and it found it to be a stable 46C.

I want to try the step of uninstalling the graphics drivers and installing updated ones from the nividia website but i am not experienced in this area and want to know a few things such as.

Will the Windows drivers be able to run the integrated GPU and at least give me a GUI? (while the nvidia ones are not installed)

Will there be any problems with optimus if the nvidia drivers are momentarily not installed?

I have attached one of those BSOD report zip files that you guys are so fond of.

For the time when the NVIDIA drivers are uninstalled, windows would go back to generic drivers (640x480 in 256 colors I think...not pretty but readable. I'm not familiar with optimus but I assume it's switched off since the drivers are unloaded

Boot up in safe mode
Run Driver Sweeper... [...] 35b9146e96

Click on the Video driver and Clean the driver from your system.
FYI - you can only do this from the Safe mode.
Upon reboot, Microsoft will use the Microsoft default video driver.
And yes it's the same old D1 error
not any closer to find the real culprit (sure ntkrnlmp.exe is blamed but if that driver is corrupt you had much bigger problems)

Thanks for your time. I really hope i can completely resolve this problem without reinstalling windows... i don't really have anything i can back up files to other than my 7 year old Packard bell.

I think i have fixed the problem.

The error on the BSOD made reference to the graphics card driver but it didn't specify which one.... No matter how many times i re-installed the nvidia ones the problem would come back so i decided to remove and install the Intel ones again and so far (2 days) the problem has not resurfaced.

It seems the problem lies in the Intel integrated graphics and not the dedicated Nvidia one.
