BSOD At startup

I have my Windows 64bit pro install CD but I get the bsod when I try loading from that too. I'll try to categorize the info I'm giving so you can skip parts you don't need:

My system info
-Windows 7 Professional, 64bit full retail version (upgraded from Vista 2 months ago probably, never had any problems until now)
-Intel® Xeon(R) CPU E5430 @ 2.66GHz × 8 (2 quad core)
-6GB DDR2800 RAM (server type)
-2x24" dell monitors
-1 ~300GB Western Digital hdd
-The computer was bought refurbished I think (boss bought it).

Changes I made right before getting bsod
-Shrunk primary partition from ~300gb to 250gb
-Installed Virtual CloneDrive
-Installed Adobe flash updates
--> this is when I got the bsod for the first time but the computer restarted just fine
-Installed Fedora on the spare space I created (this left me unable to boot into windows for a while, but using the windows disk and the cmd tool it has and some bootrec.exe functions I got that solved)
-Installed Easy BCD (Download EasyBCD 2.0.2 - NeoSmart Technologies) and setup mbr to manage both Fedora and Windows
-Some things I noticed while I was running Windows 7 happily for the last two times:

• I opened my computer and it took ~30 seconds to load (blank screen and the progress bar at the top moving slowly..
• Computer hung on shutdown (I saw only my background for about 30 seconeds before it just went black (I could still move the mouse) and I waited a few minutes before forcing shutdown).

Current Status
-Fedora 15 is still working perfectly (what I'm using right now)
-Windows 7 won't load from CD or hdd (bsod after the logo sits and flashes for a few seconds)
-Using Fedora I have full access too all my files on Windows so one plan I have is to try to replace the volsnap.sys.. but I don't know much about it (or if using linux to move windows files is a good ro bad idea)
-I've run hardware diagnostics but everything seems to be passing

Sorry I can't include the files you requested but not being able to start windows makes it kind of hard.


Any suggestions/questions/comments/explosives would be greatly appreciated. And of course, if you want more detail about any of what I wrote just ask.

A tip dont use Virtual CloneDrive,thats gives a troubles.
Use http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/mi...c-overview.htm is perfect for win 7.

Sure did.. I should have mentioned that. I've tried Safe mode, and the last working boot or whatever that options is called. Both fail just the same as booting normally.

You think clone drive could be causing problems? I didn't read up on it before installing 'cause a coworker suggested it.


Just tried replacing the volsnap.sys with one located in a backup directory (system32/driverstore/filerepository). That didn't change anything. I've noticed the bsod does not always mention that file.


Edit: A note after reading up more: I have Daemon tools lite installed.. I have had that installed for a long time though.. could it have clashed with virtual clone drive and errupted in all the blue pixels I'm seeing lately?

The easy way,remove any virtual drive you have.
Dont use 2 virtual disk software at the same time.
Again, use Freeware MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM(MagicDisc) Overview its problems free(better for now dont use any virtual disk software).
After uninstalling any software is a good idea to run ccleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner that is for cleaning any bad fragments the uninstallation left behind.
And again please always post back with any results!

thanks for your reply.. unfortunately I can't even load windows at all. I'm using Fedora right now (on the same drive, different partition). I can access all of my files on what would be my C:\ drive in windows, but I'm doing that through Fedora.

Another thing I just realized: I only have the Windows 7 update CD.. which means that when it tried to load from the CD I don't think it does in the same away a full install CD would.. I'll go see if I can find another windows 7 profesisonal 64bit cd laying around somewhere that is actually the full version.

Edit: I found a Windows 7 Professional 64bit recovery disc but it crashes on startup too.. (although oddly and probably inconsequently it used the Windows Vista loading animation)

I think I might have found a clue. It looks like Fedora is recognizing my hard drive as an ata for reason. I also got a random message in a diagnostics saying that I don't have any sata drives. I'll be looking into this more as soon as the computer is done running more tests.

Under the System Monitor in Fedora I see my drive with Windows 7.. This is what it says:
Device: /dev/sda3
Directory: /media/OS
Type: fuseblk
Total: 256.0 GiB
Free: 110.8 GiB
Available: 110.8 GiB
Used 145.2 GiB

Does that look like Fedora has somehow overwritten the configuration for the drive?

A little more info about what Fedora has to say about my hard drive (from Disk Utility)

Model: ATA WDC WD320...
Location: PHY 1 of SAS Host Adapter
Device: /dev/sda
Connection: ATA
Partitioning: Master Boot Record

I am positive the drive is SATA, and connected through a SATA cable.. Does this make sense to anyone?

Yes it does!
Fedora <sees>>us system different and wrong and that with all the above cost troubles.
Btw why you use fedora?
Win 7 is almost a perfect OS.
Do a clean Win 7 install and i believe you will be very happy :)

It's beginning to look like I should.. however I think I'll mess around more before doing so. I feel like I'm getting close. I use Fedora 'cause I want a linux based machine so that I can view files on ext3 drives. All the programs that allowed me view the files in Windows seemed very buggy and not very functional.
