[RESOLVED] System Repair cannot fix automatically

    [RESOLVED]

    Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline
    Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385
    Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385
    Problem Signature 03: unknown
    Problem Signature 04: 21201029
    Problem Signature 05: AutoFailover
    Problem Signature 06: 4
    Problem Signature 07: CorruptFile
    OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
    Locale ID: 1033

I have windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and today, while running an install for something, my computer crashes and goes into startup repair. After a while it says 'problem cannot be fixed automatically'. I have no idea what I can do because I tried the system restore and that didn't work either (should I try an even earlier date?!). Please help!

Yes you can try the System Restore with earlier date.
If that doesn't work, maybe this can help you.

I forget; it was for some game that I found on the internet...I suppose this is my fault...

I tried the second option (infinite loop recovery) and everything was copied fine...but it still isn't opening. When I looked at the report, besides showing a lot of 'test run' blah blah blah, it said

    Root cause found:
    --------------------
Boot critical file D:\CI.dll is corrupt

And then at the bottom it said:
    Repair action: system restore
    Result:failed. Error code = 0x490
    Time taken = 0ms

Repair action: System files integrity check and repair
Result: Failed. Error code = 0x490
    Time taken = 824590 ms

And now there is not system restore points!

    EDIT
    Now it's a different signiture
    Problem Signature 06: 6

I don't know if that's good or bad...It changed after I tried to fix it by using the "Startup Repair Infinite Loop Recovery". Does that mean one problem is fixed, but another had come up?

    Yes,

Press the F8 key repeatedly at boot up or use the Startup disk.

    Try this:
    Startup Repair
Note: You may need to do startup repair 3 to 4 times.

As it was a game you download, it would worth running:

I've tried start up repair but not one after another. I'll try that. It could take a while, though.

Is there anyway to copy an extra d:\ci.dll from somewhere (is there backups?!) and then to start in safe mode to try to remove (what I believe now to be) the rootkit/virus?

    EDIT
I can't start in safe mode (I can access startup repair though) but even running it a number of times directly after each other (and again with restarts in between), the problem is still there.

I'm beginning to think there is nothing I can do...

I'll have to pop out to get a set of blank CD's tomorrow. I'll post then saying if it works or not.

Thanks for all your help so far!

Can you open notepad? If you can, copy and paste these lines in Note pad.

    @Echo on
    pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
    attrib -h -s -r hosts
    echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
    attrib +r +h +s hosts
    popd
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /flushdns
    netsh winsock reset all
    netsh int ip reset all
    shutdown -r -t 1
    del %0

Save as flush.bat to your desktop.
Right click on the flush.bat file to run it as Administrator. Your computer will reboot itself.

Now see if you can download and run TDSSKiller http://support.kaspersky.com/downloa...tdsskiller.zip save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract the file and run it.
    • Once completed it will create a log in the root directory (usually C:\).
    • Please post the contents of that log in your next reply.

Nope, unfortunately (thanks anyway :) )

But, I am running the scanning thing via a USB and its working (so far), it's just taking ages. Fingers crossed that it works!
