MSI Gt628 BSOD Random Crashes.. PLEASE HELP!!

Hello everyone, i just joined this forum as my last hope for fixing these blue screen of death problems on this laptop... i bought this laptop on craigslist about 2 days ago and all i keep getting is constant blue screen crashes.. i tried a clean install of windows 7 ultimate x64 , i updated to sp1 , i installed all the drivers in the device manager and the problem still persists. Basically i dont know what to do anymore, i read the forum rules for attaching the blue screen report and i hope someone can help me out, i really need help on this. I read some solutions from this forum and i tried applying them and nothing seems to work, so maybe someone can read the error report and help me solve this terrible problem =(

Hello Ghost, welcome to the forum!

I think you have a hardware error.
If the analysis is correct it seems it's a code 124. See this tutorial:
Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try

I don't know what "Craigslist" is but if you have any way of checking with the vendor....I would return it and have it checked or replaced. If this is a secondhand site and no guarantees then solving the problem might depend on how much you are willing to do in a notebook, as for most, that's not as accessible as a PC...

    thanks for the reply mvdb...

craigslist is a site just like ebay where u buy stuff from other people but back to the problem... i bought it off someguy and it just keeps giving me these bsod randomly and since u say it might be a hardware problem.. i would think it could be the harddrive on the laptop since it has a 500gb and the laptop from the company comes with a 320gb harddrive... so im thinking that the guy who sold it to me changed the harddrive and that might be the problem even though i did tests on the harddrive with seatools and it passed all of them. do u think that the harddrive could be the conflict ? i know it's hard to tell but i am interested in ur opinion. again, thanks for the reply.

No, not really. At least, not yet. Let's go over some more history on this LT first. Did it come with W7 pre installed? I haven't had the time to check the numbers/versions... Have you checked if this LT and it components are W7 compatible?

If we go into hardware checking, first thing is memory... See tutorial and check with memtest86+

it came with windows vista pre installed.... and no i havent checked if the components are w7 compatible, but it's a fairly new laptop (2010) so it should be w7 certified, in the website they even say that they recomend w7 for it.

hi mvdb, i just finished performing the memory test on the lt and it passed with no errors so it's definetly not the memory... any more suggestions? , another thing to note, i only get these bsod when im browsing or downloading even chatting online, i do not get them while playing 3d games (street fighter iv) , it runs flawlessly but once i start browsing (google chrome / ie9) the lt usually gets the bsod....

Well, if the dump analysis is good, chances are it is really hardware, but.. you never know. This is not an exact science.

If your system performs well under stress but freezes while (nearly) idle.. then there are some things you can try:

    1. Turn off ALL powersaving modes. Be sure to do so not only in your power profile, advanced settings, but also at the level of your devices (i.e. the energysaving options for each device (USB, PCI, sata etc)

    2. Turn off any devices you dont really need. Known problem makers in case of freezes while idle are usb cardreaders for example.

    3. Start a full set of system tests:

Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark

I assume youve already done a standard chkdsk: Disk Check

Hey Mvdb, i was doing a stress test with prime95 and it was passing every test but then i got a blue screen... maybe because i started chatting on aim, but anyway: since i keep getting these bsod 124 , i know it's a hardware problem, so i decided to open up the laptop and check it out to see if there's anything unusual inside, because i just bought it from a stranger a couple of days ago and in the website he noted that he "flashed" the graphics card on the laptop from the nvidia geforce gts 160m to a quadro fx 3700m .... so when i opened up the laptop and looked at the vga adapter , i saw a lot of "white stuff" "glued" on the vga adapter which is a quadro fx 3700m, so i decided to clean that out the best that i could because i dont know what that was but it didnt seem normal... so i cleaned it because it had a lot of it inside and now it's neat, lets see if that was causing these crashes (?) , hopefully u can give me so input on it...thanks.

ps. if all else fails im going to see if i buy the "original" graphics card that the laptop brings which is a geforce gts 160m .... maybe by "flash" he means that he changed the graphics card ? im not too familiar with that term.... well thanks for any info on this, i'll appreciate it.

I think he tried to pull one over on you by using the term flash. It normally means to change a piece of hardware, such as a BIOS or a ROM by replacing the information on it, not by changing the actual hardware. It may be that it's an incompatible piece of hardware, and you might have to replace it. Cleaning it probably will help as well. Can you tell if it's a plug-in type piece of hardware, or does it look soldered in?
