    Hibernate BSOD problem

    Folks,

I've been troubleshooting on my own with minimal success. Basically, it is a 9f Stop Error, which my research shows is a driver problems. Checking Device Manager, it appears all the items have the latest drivers. I ran the memory test and it passed. I ran 'chkdsk /f', 'sfc /scannow' and both are good. I have BlueScreen View and WinDbg to review minidump files. Lately, it is saying pci.sys is the issue. I'm not convinced as that is a Microsoft component. I can't seem to restore to a point before the problem.

I have a recently purchased Toshiba Satellite C660 running Windows 7 Pro SP1 in 32-bit mode (Anytime Upgrade from Home Premium) with 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, 640 GB hard drive. Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5740; Realtek HD Audio and Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller Network card. I have an AOC 936W external monitor, Microsoft Comfort Desktop 5000 keyboard and mouse and a Samsung USB drive as external devices. But, detaching all the peripherals for several troubleshooting sessions made no difference in behavior.

I grabbed the SF utility to generate reports as the BSOD posting instructions recommend and I will include attachments.

Here's hoping the pros here can shed light and the upload goes well.

Crashes are being caused by your Realtek network driver. I believe there is a newer driver out. Try download it and seeing if it helps.

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

In Device Manager, the Realtek PCIe Family Controller shows the driver version as 7.43.321.2011. On the Toshiba page for this notebook's current drivers:

    http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/support/computers/satellite/c660/psc1ga-01e01m/download?os=24

It shows the Realtek Network Driver as 7.023.0623.2010.

On the linked page you list, is this the one I want?

By the way, is this the line that implicates the Realtek driver?

    FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: 0x9F_3_Rt86win7_IMAGE_pci.sys

If I search for Rt86win7 on the Realtek site, I get no results. I'm guessing the FAILURE_BUCKET_ID line is concatenating several pieces of information together.

With more searching I found this interesting page:

    Driver Reference

I'm hoping to get to a point where self-support is a bit more understandable.

I had to use Safe Mode to update the driver using Device Manager but, once done, the problem appears to be gone in a couple of test sessions.

I have to say the process of troubleshooting a driver conflict is a bit too cryptic. I researched widely, have the "Windows 7 Inside Out" book and am not afraid of reviewing crash logs or work at the command line. Now that I see the 'bucket' line embeds the problem driver, I can use Google or Bing to see what it is and then use Device Manager to have a look-see. I found the "Driver Details" button lists the various driver files for a device and my problem Realtek driver was there.

Before the update, I ran cmd > driverquery and saved the results. After successful update, I ran it again and then compared the two files side-by-side. Only one line in the results changed, for the RTL8167 module. It is a Realtek item, perhaps some hidden parent of my problem file. (It does not appear in the driverquery list. I'm just trying to understand all of this.)

In my reading here on the forums, I found a recommendation against using Windows Update for drivers and also against using the Windows wizard in "Update Driver" of Device Manager. The consensus is to go to the vendor's site and update manually. This page describes it well:

How To Update Drivers in Windows 7

I guess the issue I have is that I cannot see how a regular user who just wants to get work done can self-support their Windows system. It is a good idea to log changes you make and when behavior changes to walk back and uninstall a problem program or use System Restore, etc. I'm reasonably well-versed in that process but this was completely beyond me. I can say finding the forums is a great resource and I am much better informed now to boot.

All in all, this was a frustrating process until I submitted my dump files and report here for review. Thanks again for your help. It was much, much appreciated.
