Black screen of death? Win7 won't load properly

Hello

I'm running Win7 x64 and this weekend I installed some updates using the autoupdate tool. I started to shut off/install the updates and left home. My girlfriend then called saying that there was some kind of error going on, I think it was with the harddrive (not sure though). I rush home (my baby is hurting) and see that a repair tool is working with something. Although I can't really say what ( I was in a rush).

Anyway, now when I try to boot I get stuck right after the logo/loading screen with nothing but a black screen and my mousecursor which I can move around.

It seems that things are sort of working behind the darkness, energy management is the same, I get different resolutions when trying with safe mode although just the black screen.
I've tried all the common tips and tricks such as: Ctrl+Alt+Del, Shift x 5, repair using boot disc etc.
I thought of doing a rollback of the system but I can't find any points of restoration to choose from, I was under the impression that such a point was created before every update?

I've messed around with anything and before I reinstall windows I thought I'd check with you guys.:)

I've tried all of the repair options on the Win7 disc, and none will work. It appears that I have no restorationpoints to choose from. Can't say why but my guess is that something with the update screwed them up.
When using the bootrepair utility I get the message that everything starts as it should.
As mentioned above, system restore won't find any restorepoints (You'll have to excuse me if I get some of the terms wrong, translating directly from swedish).
When I try to locate a system image disk I can't find any.

I've tried out swapping ports on the videocard and changing the settings in the bios for the preferred boot device.

On a side note I've managed to back all the important stuff using an external HDD and the command prompt from the Win7 Install Disc.

indeed, starting it now, but it would have been interesting to know what caused it.

I am having the same problem, and I am not as knowledgeable as the original poster. How did you use the boot disk to recover files from the hard drive?

i had the same problem like you, causes will be a lot, but someone point me maybe will be a trojan (daonol), if you are hurry (like me) in get again your pc funcionally, need to clean install; but if you have time, will be a very exhausting process of use antivirus, antimalwares and reinstalls (unfortunly i had no luck with that, one week and black screen still there) so i planning to format to clean install, painful but more effective.
