I haven't used the tool recently it used to allow you to automatically find updates. Don't know if it still does (I build my own computers)
The only thing I can think of beyond that is to actually write hp and ask them for help with it. Usually the nvidia mobile driver works. Don't know why it refuses to in this case.

    It gives me four options...
    Maintain
    Troubleshoot
    Learn
    Get assistance
Got any insight on which to choose?

well we are troubleshooting aren't we? :)

I really wish I could be of more help here, you may want to try installing the nvidia made driver one more time.
The problem you have is the driver hp is offering is too old to have proper support for the games you are trying to play.

Alright, any other drivers that might work besides the NVIDIA one?

Well it's possible the bios update for that system that includes additional win7 support. will fix you.

HP Pavilion dv7-1000 Entertainment Notebook PC series - HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors) - HP Business Support Center
I also notice it's very recent. It would look at their instructions for flashing the bios, or they have info on the forums there at hp.
