So I ran the repair one time and got an error like "Could not save options". Then when I rebooted I get the following error:

"windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause. to fix the problem

...

File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: an error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data"

Well, it looks like there's an issue with your hard drive that prevents the BCD from being saved - and I'd have to wonder if it's related to the BSOD.

Status: 0xc000000f is
STATUS_NO_SUCH_FILE ((NTSTATUS)0xC000000F
Which says to me that the system can't find the BCD store - which means that there's issues with the partition (IMO)
Are you running Startup Repair from a disk or from the built in partition on the hard drive. I prefer to use it from a disk as it seems to work better for me (even if I have to load the drivers manually). And, I suggest running it 3 times (rebooting inbetween) for maximum effectiveness.

I recall using Partition Magic years ago. I used it a lot and eventually found that using it too much would cause my system to become unrepairable. The only fix was a full format of the hard drive.

BTW - I'm asking a friend to have a look at this topic also.

I went ahead and deleted all the partitions on the disk and recreated one for the retail Win 7 Home Premium install. After install the shut down/sleep problem is still present.

I ran the repair from a thumb drive. I will try again tonight from a DVD.

I will also rerun xperf to see if we get anything different.

Wipe the entire HDD with KillDisk; reinstall Windows 7.

Format HDD - sysnative.com - MVP

If sleep issue present after full retail install, unknown hardware failure is the likely cause.
