    BSOD when playing LOTRO

Over the past two weeks, my system has started crashing with a BSOD. This only happens while I'm playing Lord of the Rings Online, and only when I'm moving between areas that require new content to be loaded (e.g. entering a building or an instance).

I have had my system for over a year, and have been playing this game for six months without problems prior to this. I have not installed any new hardware or software recently, with the exception of updates. I have updated my graphics and sound card drivers, but the issue persists.

My system is a CyberPowerPC rig with the following:

    • Windows Pro 7 x64, original (came pre-installed)
    • Intel Core i5-760 2.80 GHz CPU
    • ASUS P7P55 LX Motherboard
    • 4GB (2GB x2) DDR3/1600MHz Dual-Channel RAM
    • NVidia GeForce GTX 470 1.2 GB Video Card
    • Creative Labs SB X-FI XtremeGamer Sound Card

I've attached the BSOD diagnostics listed by the sticky on BSOD postings.

Thanks in advance for any help!

The problem is apparently coming from your creative labs audio device. I suggest dropping by there and checking for driver updates.
    Creative Worldwide Support

The other possibility is a memory issue, though it would be easier to check this driver first.

p.s. it won't hurt to run a secure file check, there's some weird stuff going on in the driver report in these minidumps.

The most recent crash was Related to ctoss2k.sys Creative OS Services Driver. I would re-install with the newest available or remove if it isnt critical.

    Another huge cause is sptd.sys

Please remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%.

They use a driver, found in your dmp, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs.

Use this SPTD uninstaller DuplexSecure - Downloads

when you're done you can use this Freeware MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM(MagicDisc) in its place.

Also of note are several old drivers needing updating
    Code:
    pcouffin.sys 12/5/2006 10:39:30 AM fffff880`04416000 fffff880`0442a380 0x00014380 0x457584a2
    ctac32k.sys 7/2/2008 4:38:22 AM fffff880`052f8000 fffff880`053a6000 0x000ae000 0x486b3e7e
    AsIO.sys 4/6/2009 3:21:08 AM fffff880`045c9000 fffff880`045cf000 0x00006000 0x49d9ad64
    How To Find Drivers:
    - search Google for the name of the driver
    - compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
    - visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
    - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
    - - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference Driver Reference
    - - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: Drivers and Downloads

Thanks to both of you for the super-quick response!

Regarding the Creative driver, I just upgraded to the latest yesterday and was still having BSODs as of last night. I don't know whether I can just remove this, since it's part of my audio drivers. How do I go about determining whether and how to get rid of this file, or fix it?

well first of all if you right click the speaker icon in the tray and choose playback devices.
How many items are in that list?
We may simply have a device conflict.

There are two devices, "speakers" and "SPDIF out". Both are shown as "Creative SB X-Fi".

okay, not a device conflict then.
I did find this which seems to be basically the same issue.

They actually suggest physically moving the location of the sound card in the box.

There is also some additional information about x-fi and lotro here.

Well, after a few weeks I think I can safely say that this problem has been solved.

I checked my audio settings in LOTRO and saw that there were two different selections available for the Creative card, just with different names. I changed the selection and since then have had no problems.

I'm guessing that when I installed the latest Creative drivers, something happened that left the old setting available, but that it really shouldn't have been there.
