The dump files are pretty inconclusive. The error logs show a massive number of failed update attempts and many crashes by norton backup.

Could you give this little procedure a try?
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

this is bad karma for me not posting for so long... or maybe just becuase I dont look after my computer...but anyway
Computer bluescreens about a minute after I login.
Because it only stays on about a minute before bluescreening, I doubt I cant run BSOD posting instructions.

    BSOD says roughly the following:

    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
    STOP 0x00000000000A (0x000000000000DC, 0x0000000000002, 0x0000000000001
    XFFFFF80002c4c525
    collecting data for crash dump
    initialising disk for crash dump
    beginning dump of physical memory
    dumping physical to disk

    MAIN QuESTION:
I still have files that I want still on the computer, is it an issue continually blue-screening my computer so I can remove files off the hard drive?
    Is reformatting the best option?

Have you tried booting Safe Mode and cleaning out the startup items in msconfig?

Sounds like something in your startup is crashing the machine. If you can remove it you might get normal behavior back.
...safe mode can also be used for backing up your files.

Started in start-up (edit: safe mode) mode and the backing up process and wiping has begun. thanks for the tip.
What do you mean by "cleaning out the startup items in msconfig"

    cheers
