Error 0x80070057: The parameter is incorrect on Copy Paste

    Hi,

When trying to copy a file off a networked drive I get the following error: Error 0x80070057: The parameter is incorrect.

This is the second time this has occurred. The first time I was trying to copy 4 files and 3 of them were copied correctly and the other was not. The solution then was to add it to a zip archive and then copy that.

This time, adding it to an archive does not work.

This is not a file path issue, other files with longer source and destination paths copy fine.

Any idea what is going on?

    Cheers,

    Jason

    Hello Jason, welcome to SF!

There are a couple of possible reasons but the most common one is a disk problme which we can check easily, depending on your authorizations on the network drive.

Are you the admin of this network (is it a home network or work)?

If HOME.... then please first do a checkdisk on all disks involved.
    A- CHKDSK /R /F:

Run CHKDSK /R /F from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt.

Do this for each hard drive on your system.

When it tells you it can't do it right now - and asks you if you'd like to do it at the next reboot - answer Y (for Yes) and press Enter.

Then reboot and let the test run.

It may take a while for it to run, but keep an occasional eye on it to see if it generates any errors.

See "CHKDSK LogFile" below in order to check the results of the test.

    B- Elevated Command Prompt:

Go to Start and type in "cmd.exe" (without the quotes)

At the top of the Search Box, right click on Cmd.exe and select "Run as administrator"

    Post back any results please..

I ran CHKDSK on the machine that was displaying the error and there were no error.

I don't see how there can be anything wrong with the file or the disk, given the workarounds:
    1. Add the file to an archive and transfer that across then extract on the other side. (only works sometimes)
    2. Upload the file to a website then download it on the destination machine.

In both cases the end result is the same damn file on both ends. There must be something unique to the copy / paste mechanism (the clipboard?) that is causing this error.

    Solution

Reinstalling the Virtual Box Guest Additions solved the problem.
