very embarrassing but i can't seem to get into safe mode. pressing the f8 key takes me to a menu that chooses the boot drive...or something like that??. have tried about 10 times now and can't seem to get there. was always given the safe mode option after a crash but have never tried it.

as a follow up...where will i find the repair/install OS info once i'm in safe mode (if we figure out how to get into safe mode lol).

agree regarding having an OS disc. didn't know i wouldn't have one until after unboxing the asus. have always had one in the past (xp, vista ect) but i guess asus decided to cut a corner here and hang me out to dry.

    cheers

It might be another key on your Asus. Check with the mfr (or in the manual) to be sure.

If you dont have the OS dvd they probably gave you a "repair" dvd which will guide you through the process.

have spent 3 days trying to get the repair dvd disc set-up. it's on my pc and the manual has simple instructions to get it onto a disc (without going into safe mode). problem is...i keep getting error messages as the burn is completing?. getting a formatting error right before it finishes.

tried to format a disc upfront/independently and i get another formatting error. thought there might be something wrong with the files on my pc so i found a site that has the same win7 image (neosmart files). downloaded it fine to my desktop but got yet another formatting error when i tried to burn it from my desktop?. i have no problems ripping music so my drive does work. it all very confusing .

this is eerily similare to my win7 back-up functions failure. have never been able to use it due to an writing error right before it completes. this has been the case since day one. could not back up my info until i got norton installed and starting using its back up feature. is there a chance that all of this could be related??(including my BSOD)?

contacted asus and am again being told to send the pc in. no attempt to help me via phone support. they are telling me it's out of warranty now and charges will be incurred...along with losing all my stuff and the pc for several weeks. REALLY don't want to do this but looks like i'm running out of options. any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    cheers
