    PXE-E53: No boot filename received???


    I need some serious help here. I left my computer on like I always do to go and make some food and whatever, but when I came back this black and white screen was up and this is what it said:

    I don't know what the hell happened or what any of this means. The system was just idling and was NOT doing anything other than keeping FireFox open for me, with some Youtube videos and Facebook up.

    Anyway, I did the only thing I could think to do because I had thought this might be some kind of sick attack to breach through my network (it has happened to me before), and so I did a hard shut down and when the system started back up, there wasn't a whisper of a problem after that. Just trying to make sense of this... BSODs I am used too, but this is an entirely different beast altogether and it makes absolutely NO SENSE given that the system wasn't doing anything with files or otherwise at the time of this incident.

    Hi there,

    The screen you described sounds like the screen you see when the system reboots, "Boot from Network" is enabled in the BIOS, and no CD/USB drive/Hard drive is set to boot before it, or else none is found.

    For now, I'd pass it off as a random fluke. Perhaps a glitch from the power company? If you're concerned, you might run some hardware diagnostics, namely the three Prime95 tests and Memtest86.

    Thank you Johnathan, I think I will play it safe and go ahead and run those programs. Also, since posting this I've learned that this could be an indication of HDD failure... but I can't see how because I JUST ran a full diagnostic on that one as well as the other two external ones and they all passed, just a couple of months ago. I am not even certain that the system rebooted itself while I was gone or not... it does that for automatic updates (which incidentally are supposed to be disabled), but I don't think that happened here. Besides that, I checked the BIOS Boot Order and it was all correct on the default settings (HDD first).

    However, I have had some random BSODs in the last six months, and apparently they all have something to do with the network and NIC. Perhaps this is due to the same issue(s)? Acer hasn't released a single driver update for this system and they are all from 2009 or earlier (but I'm afraid to try and get updated versions off of the vendor's sites because I've had massive problems with doing that on other systems and just don't have the patience to factory restore once again this year over these kinds of issues).

    Not to mention, Broadcom doesn't even release its wireless drivers to the general public!
