Hi-End Computer recently starting stuttering every 2 seconds.

    Hey,

I have a pretty high-end computer and I've been using it for 4months. It's been really fast and everything. A few days ago, I've been having really bad and unexplainable lags. During the lag periods, the WHOLE system FREEZES for a good second. It then works for 2 seconds and freezes again for a second. This cycle continues until it feels like working again...

Whenever this "lag" happens, my internet connection drops and I have to wait for about a minute and a half for it to start working again.

I've been through MSConfig and Services and disabled all garbage.

    My system specs:

    Mobo: Gigabyte H61M-D2P-B3
    RAM: Mushkin 8GB DDR3-1333
    CPU: Intel Core i5 Sandy Bridge - 3.1GHz - 6MB
    HDD: WD 1TB SATA 6GB/S 7200RPM
    GPU: Radeon Sapphire HD5570 1gbDDR3
    OS: W7 Ultimate x64

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    Youshoe Welcome to SevenForums,

do us a favor and fill out the system specs. When that is done then no one ever has to know that you described your system in your first post, rather they just click on that "system specs" in small print at the bottom right of any one of your posts.

Now here's a write-up that will help you gather info about your system.
    Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (3rd item in the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec
    (left-hand column)

To gather info, use SIW or Speccy or System Info

Add the word laptop or desktop or netbook to the
    “system manufacturer” block, for example,
    Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
    MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on the SAVE CHANGES button.

Ok now let's get down to addressing your problem.
You could have some type of malware.
You could have a disk with problems.
You could be in need of defragmentaion.
You could have a program or driver causing the problem.
Your AV/anti-spyware/firewall could be causing the problem.

Yep, despite the fact that everything ran fine before, sometimes different programs/drivers/etc don't like to play together.

What AV and anti-anything are you using?

Imperative is that despite any measures which have been taken against bad guys, since they sometimes get through your defenses, then:
Download and run MalwareBytes. Link in my sig.

Go only to MalwareBytes.org. That site will then give you another site for the actual download. The actual sites are continually changing so that MalwareBytes presents a moving target against malware.

Hi Youshoe and welcome to the Windows 7 forums.

Have you taken a look at your task manager to see if a process is hogging the CPU when this happens?

I've done a quick scan with MalwareBytes to no avail. It says no infections

The only things running are AVG, system, and chrome/msn when I'm using them. The program happens sometimes even without chrome/msn running...

AVG has been known to cause problems.

As an experiment, completely uninstall AVG
Completely uninstall any other AV, anti-anything software.

Install Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) Link in my sig.

I'm wondering WHY this happened all of a sudden. Did you download anything new, like any Windows Updates or any new software? If so, you might have had a corrupted download, or as karlsnooks suggested, some apps don't work well together --- and some don't work well with Win 7 x64. In either event, you might consider uninstalling and reinstalling whatever you downloaded. Or you could do a System Restore to a restore point just prior to the start of these problems. Before you do so, even though System Restore shouldn't affect your personal files or settings, you might want to back up your personal files to an external source.

2 possibilitees that have not been mentioned is a possible stik of RAM gone bad and/or a flakey PSU...
To check the RAM DLoad MemTest...follow the info on creating a bootable CD...let it run at least 2 hours.
Any errors at all and you have a bad stik of RAM...

To test the PSU borrow a known good one of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there overnite...you'll know right away if it's the PSU.
    Best of Luck...

I' d also look at the "event viewer" for any errors. In both system and applications.

I noticed you didn't mention your power supply in your specs. This information might help. Brand name and watts.

Check the CPU/fan throttling in bios or a setting in Windows power saving / a n other prog

set bios back to default - test

Then put stuff back to normal setting
