Windows 7: BSOD while using a Firewire Audio Interface

BSOD while using a Firewire Audio Interface

Few weeks ago I bought an external audio interface Focusrite Saffire PRO 24 DSP. It's a firewire hardware and while using it I ocasionally get BSOD. Tried using it with both enabled and disabled onboard realtek chip but that does not solve the problem. I installed the newest software/drivers provided by Focusrite but the problem still exists.

It looks like the firewire 1394ohci.sys driver is what is causing the issue which is updated from windows update so go into device manager and see if the device is functioning properly that there are no yellow yield signs on the controller itself. Then right click on the device and see if you can automatically install updates for it.

Quote:
Chipset Incompatibilities: The FireWire chip controls all data being streamed to and from the
FireWire port, and certain chips have been known to cause problems with connectivity. We would
recommend using either a Texas Instruments or a VIA FireWire chipset to avoid any such issues.

To check your FireWire chipset:

1 – Navigate to your Device Manager
(Win XP: Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager
Win Vista: Start>Control Panel>System>Device Manager
Win 7: Start>Control Panel>Device Manager)

2 – Locate your “IEEE Bus Host Controllers” tab, and click on the “+” to expand it

The device name is usually in the form **FireWire chipset** 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller. If
you have more than one FireWire bus, you will see more than one entry in this list.

NB: On Windows 7, if using the Windows Legacy FireWire driver this will read 1394 OHCI Compliant
Host Controller (Legacy), and will give no indication of the FireWire chipset.

4-pin FireWire Ports: The problem with the smaller, 4-pin FireWire ports is that the FireWire
cables use the connector shell for the ground connection between the computer and the device. The
shell connection can be easily interrupted if the cable is moved even slightly, causing the
FireWire device to disconnect momentarily from the computer. Although Focusrite FireWire products
will work with 4- pin FireWire ports, if experiencing the problems described above, it could be
worth using a FireWire expansion card with 6-pin FireWire ports.

The device manager says that the driver for Firewire controller and Audio Interface is up to date. Also there is not a single device that is said to be working incorectly. Yet as far as I know the problem is not solved, too bad I dont know how to execute the bug on purpose to verify it. Also I'm using the 6-pin cable.

Sometimes and a lot of the time that is the case, it just that the hardware and software/hardware are not exactly communicating properly. We can try this and hopefully we can pin down a driver that is causing the problem right now it's a little vague.

My suggestion is to enable Driver Verifier following this guide and letting your computer bsod a couple more times while it's enabled. Guide= Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable after the computer bsods at least twice disable driver verifier by opening the program again and deleting the settings either in normal mode or safe mode if you can't in normal mode.

Thanks I'll try this. Should I post some new stuff after BSODs?

After few crashes with driver verifier I made another package with diagnostic data and here it is. I will also try removing everything that has connection to my onboard sound card. That might change something.

One thing also is doing a bios update if you haven't already done so.
M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 BIOS 2301
Improve system compatibility.
2011.08.19 Update
Bios Package: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...-ASUS-2301.zip
Bios Flash Tool For Dos: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mis...DATER_V112.zip
Your Motherboard's Download page at Asus Website: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Motherboards- ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3

If the Saffire driver still gives you problems then uninstall it and see if just general plug and play drivers will work for your new device. Just a possibility..

Windows 7 Professional x64

And also decided to test the legacy 1394 driver - problem solved

Windows 7 pro 32 bit

I have a similar problem

I am having a very similar problem but I didn't understand the solution found for the previous one.

I have a Saffire PRO 24 connected to an i3 Windows 7 32 bit PC on fire-wire. It is also connected to Beringher TRUTH B2031A active monitors using PL to XLR cables.
I usually work on the Saffire with headphones which gives a clean sound but when working with the monitors I constantly hear strong noise of the PC hard disk activity through the monitors.
After eliminating all ground loops I was left with only 1 ground loop: PC -> Saffire -> Monitors. Googeling I found it is a known problem with Fire-wire audio cards and followed a recommendation to break the ground loop by disconnecting the ground of the fire-wire cable. This worked wonders and the ground loop noise disappeared.
Now I am randomly getting BSODs which point towards the saffire.sys driver.
My via 1394 OHCI is not showing issues in device manager and seem to be latest version. So is my saffire driver.

I don't know where to go from here.

crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\111611-25646-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: saffire.sys (Saffire+0xD91E)
Bugcheck code: 0x1000007E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFFFFFE4C0D91E, 0xFFFFFFFF8DB93638, 0xFFFFFFFF8DB93210)
Error: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M
file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\saffire.sys
product: Saffire
company: Focusrite A.E.
description: Saffire
Bug check description: This indicates that a system thread generated an exception which the error handler did not catch.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver:

saffire.sys (Saffire, Focusrite A.E.).
Google query: saffire.sys Focusrite A.E. SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M
