Windows Freezes/Crashes when moving data to external HD

When I attempt to move data (eg. a avi movie less than 1 GB) from my c: drive to my WD Elements USB External hard drive, Windows freezes. It will start to move the file and then freeze being finishing the task. Windows explorer doesn't respond and if I try to close that program in Task Manager and reboot, the computer freezes and will not reboot. I have to push the button on the front of the case to get it to restart.

I have installed the new firmware for the Intel chipset (I've already looked into the Nvidia patch) and I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials as my anti-virus.

The external hard drive is a Western Digital Elements 2 TB and is formatted in NTFS.

    Thanks in advance.

You may have a faulty external drive.

Contact Western Digital as explain the problem to them. Chances are they'll send you a new drive.

The transfers complete when I boot in safe mode, so that leads me to believe its not a problem with the external hard drive

Maybe so, but it might pay you to check WD's support site as others may be having a similar problem.

It certainly won't hurt to contact the drive manufacturer as they may have a solution for you.
