BSOD Irql_gt_zero_at_system_service after changing gfx settings in WoW

Hey all, thanks for taking the time to read this .

about an hour ago I tried logging back into wow for the first time in a long time, and noticed come graphical bugs at a distance at the boundaries between surfaces. I attempted to tweak the graphics settings a little bit to see if it would fix it, and immediately got a BSOD w/ the error listed in the title. I tried to reboot multiple times and couldn't get past the windows log-in screen without going into safe mode, which is how I'm posting this thread.

System Specs are essentially stock Dell XPS 15 L502x w/ Sandy Bridge specs (i.e. i7 2630QM @ 2.0 GHz, 6 GB ram, running Windows 7 64 Bit Home Premium). The computer is only about a year old, and I have never reinstalled the OS. The only "under the hood" modification I've made to the computer is too replace the Intel 1000 b/g/n wireless card with a Bigfoot Killer Wireless-N wifi card. That installation also caused a BSOD, so I had to use system restore to go back to before when I installed the card, deleted some Intel PRO/Set software that I thought might be causing the problem, and the computer was working fine until this new issue popped up.

Looking through these forums, it seems like you guys are wizards; thanks in advance for any help you can provide .

I also tried to run a perfmon /report as directed in the sticky, but whenever I did I got a "could not find x at path specified error" (maybe b/c I'm running in safe mode?), so hopefully the information provided in the dump file should be enough.

Also, in case it matters, I installed a zip utility (32-bit 7zip) *after* running jcgriff's dump collector utility, hopefully it won't affect anything significant.

quick question
Have you applied the service pack and all updates to your system?

It would also seem there's something screwy with your copy of norton power eraser, though I wouldn't think it the cause of this problem, you should probably remove/reinstall it either way.

Code:
Probably caused by : ntkrnlmp.exe ( nt!KiSystemServiceExit+245 )

I'm relatively certain everything's up-to-date; I tend to run Windows Update whenever I get a message saying I should. I'm not sure how to check, tho :-/.

As for Norton, i think it came installed with the computer, but I thought I deleted it. I'll try to delete it now just in case it might help. Will I be able to remove/uninstall it in safe mode, tho? (Still can't get past log-in screen w/o being in safe mode.)

UPDATE: weird... looking in the uninstall/change programs menu, nothing in there by Norton, and search from the start menu for "norton" or "power eraser" turned up nothing.

UPDATE 2: When I tried to run Windows Update from the start menu, nothing came up; so I check the list of installed updates, and the latest update to windows was installed on 8/24/2011. I'm not sure if that's the *latest* update, but it wasn't too long ago, either.

Let's go ahead and try this.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

It will hopefully get you booting normally at least.

Just finished running SFC, no luck from what I can tell. Got a message saying "windows resource protection did not detect any integrity violations."

I had an idea tho: I was scanning the unzipped dump file you posted, and saw that the (responsible?) process name mfefire.exe, which Google tells me is an firewall process for McAfee Antivirus. I installed Microsoft Security Essentials a while ago on a friend's reccomendation and disabled McAfee (or I least thought I did) but didn't uninstall it for some reason. I'm going to try removing it from the boot programs and/or uninstalling it now to see if that helps.

use the removal tool for mcaffee, it really embeds itself in there.
...and yes I had noticed that but many people are very , very loyal to their av/firewall software so I usually save blaming it for a few steps down the path.

How to uninstall or reinstall supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe)
