    Windows 7, explorer hang

    Hey guys,

    I have been having a problem for a while and I can't pinpoint what is causing it. My computer has been freezing, and it seems to always happen when my web browser is open. At first I thought it was firefox so I completely uninstalled it, and started using chrome instead, but the problem keeps happening.

    Basically, once it freezes I cannot click on anything or use ctrl+alt+delete, but I can still move the mouse around on the screen. I then have to do a hard shutdown; sometimes I have to take the battery out or it freezes again upon restart.

    If anybody has any idea what could be causing this, please let me know. Ask me more questions if you need to, and thanks.

    Hello cobrasting14

    Your problem may be caused by many things > RAM problems >graphics drivers > overclocking > heat issues > using more than one AntiVirus at the same time > etc etc.

    Some initial troubleshooting steps for you to try -

    * Go to search, type device manager and look for any yellow warning markers

    * Download and run SuperAntiSpyware or Malwarebytes
    Run a full scan after you update.

    * Run an Antivirus scan

    *Type event viewer, in search (by start button) > Windows Logs > Application & Sytem.
    Look for RED critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.
    Note the event ID, and the source codes and Google them for more information.

    * Make sure that you are not over heating.

    * Make sure PSU is working properly

    * If overclocking, restore to original

    * Try in safe mode.
    Does the behavior persist?

    I have faced such a situation earlier .... and discovered it is a nasty thing called rubyconproject (here is the discussion .... RubyIconProject .) I did one more thing .... changed a few settings in my downloader . One thing I haven't mentioned there, that is the browser freezing Coz I knew already that what freezes the browser !

    Though I could click on the taskbar, do you ?

    EDIT : Particularly this post helped me a lot .
