Solved Computer not booting, startup repair won't work

OK, first off, this all started happening only just a few days ago. I turned my pc on and it went straight to saying 'your computer cannot boot' or a message like that, and I was like, What??? So I went and used the startup repair which didn't work, and it asked me if I wanted to send the report to Microsoft and I did. Then it restarted, and for a split second it flashed a BSOD at me (which of course I couldn't see). So, it basically looped, and this time I chose the 'advanced options' and used the system restore, and luckily it booted into one of my earlier points. This worked, however, until you restart, the problem happens again (restart, BSOD, startup repair etc.) Anyway, I tried using a repair disc I made before this started happening, and that was exactly the same as using the pc without the cd. I tried starting in safe mode but I got a BSOD

. Is there a way I can post the error report so I can show you guys? Please! I've tried absolutely everything! Please reply as quick as you can!

I forgot to tell you that I'm using the pc right now, but if I restart I'll have the BSOD problem. I also can't uninstall programs and my AV is telling me I've turned it all off! Is this a virus?

@Golden I'm using Norton 360. Yeah, I know people say it's bad but it does the job. But I still don't know about all the problems. I'll do what you said, and I'll post back.

Hi,

Norton has been know to be a cause of BSOD's, but not all the time. Perhaps you might uninstall it temporarily (replacing it with a FREE one in the interim - try MSE) and see if you still have problems.

@Golden I might disable Norton completely and try MSE. I don't feel like reinstalling Norton, because my parents would not be too happy. I'll try it!

Hi,

If you don't uninstall Norton, you run the risk of it conflicting with MSE - if you really can't uninstall it, then better not to install MSE.

Lets just wait for a BSOD analyst to help.

@Golden I'm definitely not trying that again. I rebooted, startup repair took 3 tries, the first two took 10 minutes each, and the last one took half an hour. Sheesh! And it still failed. I reverted to my earliest restore point before I installed MSE. And Norton is working now. But, at startup on my desktop it said ASCTray.cpl is missing. But I also might know the culprit, because before I installed some registry cleaner it was working fine... I'm not entirely sure though. Any news from the BSOD analyst?

Maybe I should just use the recovery partition on the system? But I don't want to get rid of all my stuff. Maybe I should just wait?

What registry cleaner did you use? Did you use the backup that most registry have?
This may or may not help, sfc /scannow from cmd prompt/admin. If it finds a problem run it 3 more times rebooting between each one. Sfc= system file checker. IMHO if that doesn't work a repair and install would be next.
A little note: Letting us know in you first post you used this registry cleaner would of helped.

Normally you will not get rid anything.

Dont use registry cleaners,in the most of the cases rc make things worst.

Ouch....most people should steer clear of these registry cleaners. Did you miss my post where I cautioned against installing MSE without unintsalling Norton?

The BSOD fella's are in high demand so you might need to be a bit more patient until one of them is free - I have asked them to look at this when they get a chance.

For now, I recommend justing waiting until they've had a chance to look at your jcgriff file.

While waiting for the the people to get free you could run sfc /scannow. It can't hurt and my help.

Most has been ably covered, but to review so far:

I would also run SFC -SCANNOW Command.

The next step would be the Repair Install as a last resort before backing up your files and running full Factory Recovery: Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility, or find a Win7 installation DVD for Clean Reinstalling Windows 7

Never use any Registry Cleaner except CCleaner's Registry tab. The others are mostly sales scams which do nothing to help performance and will almost always cause problems.

Use either MSE or Norton, but not both. Most of us here recommend MSE which is free.

&Jonathan_King I can't uninstall advanced system care because for some reason the installers a
are corrupted! Maybe I should just backup and use the recovery partition... Because something else screwed up and now the windows activation is gone... But I'll try the sfc scannow command in the cmd prompt window in the advanced options.

You might try using Revo Uninstaller in Advanced mode to remove Advanced System Care. After the uninstaller fails, Revo will manually delete everything it can find.

I won't discourage you from using the recovery partition. That probably is the best way to do it, but if you don't want to lose your files and all you can try other things first. If you want to just backup your files and then use the recovery partition, you can do that as well. If you need help with any data backup, we can help advise you.

Oh, that's right, I was using Iobit's advanced system care, and that had a registry cleaner on it and I think that might have done it. But isn't Iobit a very popular company? I'm typing this on my iPod right now so I probably won't use my compy for maybe another hour or so, I hope all your suggestions work!
