There are many reasons why a PC " behaves" this way.
These annoying " gliches" may be caused by an overloaded hard drive, overworked CPU, Malware, running 2 AV 's, unnecessary data, Browser addons or you may have unnecessary programs running in the background etc....

Troubleshooting steps for you to try -

* Go to search, type device manager and look for any yellow warning markers.

* Download SuperAntiSpyware or Malwarebytes, run a full scan after you update.
* Run a full Antivirus scan.

*Type event viewer, in search (by start button) > Windows Logs > Application & System.
Look for RED critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.
Note the event ID, and the source codes and Google search them.

* Make sure that you are not over heating.

* Make sure PSU is working properly.

* If overclocking, restore to original.

* Try in safe mode; report back if it works properly.

Historically in Windows the vast majority of screen freezes have been related to graphics driver issues - although win7 and it's driver pool is far better than previous versions it may be worthwhile checking you have the latest drivers for your card/chip.

Another major cause of "freezing" is, Ironically, overheating, you may want to check on your temps inside the case

As long as you only use the "extra" ant-virus application in stand-alone mode, it is a very good idea to check a system with more than one application.

The problems only really start if you try to run two applications in active or resident mode.

I run intermittent scans with both Superantispyware and malwarebytes in addition to my main resident AV [Avast]

I already have Microsoft security essential. Is it OK to download another antivirus(SuperAntiSpyware or Malwarebytes) and run it?

To protect yourself from the evils of the internet your basic protection should include

*Anti Virus Program [ MSE is popular & is used by many people here]

*Anti Malware Program
*Firewall
*Router / firewall

It is important you update programs & scan regularly.

FYI...

Antimalware – A front line antimalware application is absolutely critical to avoid system infection. Your primary application should be supplemented by an on-demand scanner (part of the stacking approach).
There is no harm in downloading more than one antimalware application to be used as a secondary scanner. In fact, doing so can be advantageous. However, be sure NOT to allow more than one application to autostart, in order to prevent conflicts. For a list and download links to recommended free antimalware applications, including secondary scanners, see “Tech Thoughts Top 8 Free Antimalware Applications”, on this site.

Antivirus
– An antivirus application is another critical component in a layered defense strategy to ensure that if a malicious program is detected, it will be stopped dead in its tracks!

Thanks for the reply. I downloaded and ran both SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes, they didn't find any problem. Overheating can't be a problem because sometimes it freezes even when I start the computer after shutting down overnight. It starts ok in safe mode but I have not yet kept it on in safe mode for more than few minutes.
I can buy something to see if PSU is working properly.
and I don't know how to restore overclocking to original.
