Windows 7: New HP notebook, very frequent BSOD, no obvious cause

New HP notebook, very frequent BSOD, no obvious cause

Last week I received my brand new HP EliteBook 8560w Workstation Notebook.

Configuration is as follows:
Intel i7 2630QM quad core
nVidia Quadro 1000M
4GB DDR3 RAM

Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (pre-installed on notebook)

The problem is that I receive BSOD's very often (on average within a couple of hours after every boot, but can be as soon as 10 min. or only after over 5 hours). It's not clear what is causing the BSOD's (no specific action or application), but the last couple of days it struck me that it doesn't happen often when just browsing the internet or reading pdfs etc., more often when listening to music (wmp) or watching youtube or other flash video. But it has also happened when I wasn't really doing anything and the computer was just displaying the desktop.

I upgraded the memory to 12 GB by adding two more 4GB cards, taking them out did not matter at all (currently they are still out). I have updated the drivers for video and audio. Windows is up to date. I performed a virus scan and memory diagnostics (HP and windows) and other HP system diagnostics and flashed the BIOS. All without succes. At first AVG was installed, which I replaced by Avast! also without any result.

Really don't know what else I can do... Does anybody have a clue?

you have a driver on your system that predates win 7 that I am having trouble identifying.
LUMDriver.sys - there is mixed information on it on the internet (see google) but it is not listed in the driver reference we have built up here at sevenforums.

Being as how it predates windows 7 it could be causing your conflict crash (you are getting a very generic type of crash that is generally caused by a bad driver)

This driver shouldn't be required for any system process and should be safe to remove on that basis, though I would feel a lot better if another guru could drop in on this and give more direct info related to it.
LUMDriver.sys Fri Feb 16 07:14:48 2007 (45D5AE48)

I'm going to contradict my buddy above here and suggest against using driver sweeper for the moment as a simple update may solve the problem

Okay carrying on past that the crashes are varying greatly blaming everything from kmode to the directx graphics system.
Being as how the direct x crash is the most common one and I am unable to verify the above mentioned driver.
I'm going to go ahead and suggest applying the latest directx redist package. That can be found here
Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - DirectX Redist (June 2010)

and there is a update for the graphics driver on your model located here
HP EliteBook 8560w Mobile Workstation*-* Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center
(you have the nvidia one if you didn't know)
Hopefully fixing those two items will solve your issue for the most part.
I noticed in comments for the model that graphics have caused some people problems.
That new driver is very recent and hopefully it's specifically to address those problems.

debugger output follows for reference:

*******************************************************************************

UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (7f)
This means a trap occurred in kernel mode, and it's a trap of a kind
that the kernel isn't allowed to have/catch (bound trap) or that
is always instant death (double fault). The first number in the
bugcheck params is the number of the trap (8 = double fault, etc)
Consult an Intel x86 family manual to learn more about what these
traps are. Here is a *portion* of those codes:
If kv shows a taskGate
use .tss on the part before the colon, then kv.
Else if kv shows a trapframe
        use .trap on that value
Else
.trap on the appropriate frame will show where the trap was taken
(on x86, this will be the ebp that goes with the procedure KiTrap)
Endif
kb will then show the corrected stack.
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000008, EXCEPTION_DOUBLE_FAULT
Arg2: 0000000080050033

From what I found using google the LUMDriver.sys is part of CATIA. Has something to do with license management. The bsod's were already occuring before CATIA was installed, so that kind of rules this one out I guess. Or do you think it might be related anyway?

Ok, I followed the steps as explained by panais. I performed the GPU memory and GPU OCCT tests with OCCT, both were passed without errors. I added the graph of the GPU OCCT, which I ran for 1 hr. No BSOD's yet.

I wouldn't be horribly concerned about it, it was my response to the one kmode exception I saw in the crash dumps.
Direct x was the most common though and the driver update I linked up there should hopefully fix it up.

I've run into some systems lately that it absolutely refuses to run on though.
My own being one of them.

Anyway now we must wait the results from et123.

Thanks Maguscreed co-op is a good thing
