Is my HD toast? Windows is having trouble recognizing it.
Ok, first of all let me say that I don't have a lot of experience with pc builds. I thought it would be a fun project to build a htpc with my son. It was running well for about a month, and now problems. I have used all new components. I have
Asrock 1155 motherboard
4gb kington ram
2tb western digital green hd
Intel Pentium cpu
I don't usually turn the pc off, the other day when I selected the pc input on my tv I saw that windows was attempting a startup repair. Im not sure how this happened, the only thing I can think of is that there was an automatic update with a timed-out restart.
Anyway, the repair attempt lasted for hours since I noticed and who knows how long before. I finally decided to do a hard shut down. Upon restart, after the bios screen, I got a error saying it couldn't find my disk. I tried booting with a windows 7 disk and repairing but no luck. It could not find my disk to repair and wanted to know the location of drivers. I then tried to install win onto another partition. It showed my HD, but there was an error at the bottom of the screen saying that windows could not install to that drive. I tried to create another partition and got an error.
I then tried to run bootrec.exe from the command prompt. I kept getting the message "A device attached is not functioning". When I did the ScanOs, it couldn't find anything.
I also dug out an old copy of linux thats bootable from a CD-Rom (Im not very familiar with Linux) It started up, but I couldn't find my HD in the My Documents folder. Its been a long time since I played with it, so Im not sure I was looking in the right spot.
The HD does show up as a boot option in my bios...so I dont know. Im running SpinRite right now to see if that does anything. (Never used it before, just saw it mentioned on another post)
As I said, Im not real knowledgeable, Im just throwing mud at the wall at this point. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks for your pactience
