BSOD while watching videos or anything strenuous/multitasking

Hello:

My computer has been restarting on me constantly for the past few days. It happens whenever I do anything big on my computer.

If anyone could help that would be great-- also, I am very computer illiterate so step by step would be amazing. (It took me forever to get the attachment info..) I think I might be missing a driver or something... but I have no idea how to get it or where or what even.

Problem signature:

Windows 7 - Vista

Hi -

15 of the most recent BSODs (since September) all name Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g WiFi Adapter driver as the probable cause -
Code:
athr.sys Thu Oct 08 22:37:40 2009 (4ACEA1F4)
It needs to be updated, but I am unable to find one at HP or Atheros.
http://sysnative.com/0x1/DriverReference.html#athr.sys

Get the model number from the bottom of the laptop. dv-6700 is the series. I looked through several for athr.sys driver update, but only found old Vista drivers.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/p...submit.y=0#N29

On the unconventional side, there is an "unofficial Atheros" Czech driver site - http://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wirele...et=21&system=6

They have an October 2010 driver. If you want to try it, be sure to create a system restore point 1st -
START | type create | "create a restore point"

The contents of the Atheros AR5007 Windows 7 x86 driver download -
Code:
09/26/2010 09:10 7,891,968 athr.pdb
09/26/2010 09:10 1,882,624 athr.sys
10/01/2010 00:46 9,034 athrext.cat
10/01/2010 00:46 9,038 athrextx.cat
09/26/2010 09:10 7,162,880 athrx.pdb
09/26/2010 09:10 2,374,656 athrx.sys
09/26/2010 09:10 22,048 netathr.inf
09/26/2010 09:10 22,131 netathrx.inf
It looks OK to me; wheter it will work or not - can't say.

Install via Device Manager -
START | type devmgmt.msc | 2x-click on Network Adapters | 2x-click on Atheros | Driver tab | "update driver" button | Browse your PC - select folder that you unzipped the file to

Hi -

Thank you for the laptop info.

Please try the downlad again. In my last post, the files in the code box = the unzipped file from the Czech site. I just tried the download again - no problems here. If you are using the HP dv6700 to download it, that may be the problem.

http://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wirele...et=21&system=6

3 things to try -
- Run IE as admin - RIGHT-click on IE icon, select "Run as Administrator"
- Boot into Safemode w/ Networking
- Try another system for the download

Windows 7 is not listed as a supported OS for your system by HP, so there are no driver updates to be found - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...&lang=en&cc=us

Using the admin mode of IE worked and I was able to download the file and put the driver on my computer. Everything seems to have worked smoothly. I am currently doing a lot of high volume work on my computer to make sure the problem is solved and it doesn't restart again.

Thanks again for all your help and being very considerate of my lack of computer knowledge!

If it doesn't blue screen again by tomorrow I'll mark the problem solved.

Thanks again!
