BSOD after desktop loads

Hi all,
Been getting the BSD for the last 3 months, roughly at one per month, always just after the desktop loads. It all seemed to start when I tried to overclock my ATI Radeon HD5670 graphics card to get a bit more oomph out of it. I used the official ATI Catalyst Overdrive software and let it find the optimum settings in auto, and got a 10% increase in performance. All seemed well until I played Crysis to see if there was any difference. After 5 minutes it froze up and crashed, but no BSD. I tried again, and after two minutes it crashed again and this time I got the BSD. One mistake I could have made is not increasing the card's fan speed to 100% while playing Crysis with the overclock. Straight away I undid the overclock and uninstalled the ATI Catalyst software. A week later I got another BSD. This time I did a fresh re-install to original factory settings to finally nail it. The games now all play fine. However, I keep getting seemingly random BSD's, always straight after the desktop loads. Two have been identical code 24's, one other being code 50. I have attached the latest one (code 24). I don't have the others. I suspect that I have done something (slight damage?) to the graphics card during the overclock, as it all started after that.
All case and graphics card fans are working OK, so no overheating issue. All drivers are up to date. I have done various stress tests, and all seems fine. The anti-virus is McAfee, which has never given me a single problem. I maxxed the memory out to 4Gb a year ago. And nothing is overclocked. No other mods have been made to the PC.
My PC is a Hewlett Packard G5105UK. 15 months old.
CPU: Athlon II X3 440
RAM: 4GB DDR3 - matching 2 x 2Gb modules
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD5670 512Mb
The operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I hope you can help. I suspect the graphics card, as I haven't had a BSD in my computing life until the attempted overclock. Although it could always be something else.

Regards
Andy.

Hi -

The bugcheck was 0x24 (1904fb,,,) and named ntfs.sys as the probable cause.

Given 0x24 + ntfs.sys, it is prudent to run HDD diags - - http://www.techsupportforum.com/2828431-post7.html

An exception code was found - 0xc0000005 = memory access violation, i.e., "access denied". It may be the McAfee firewall; not sure. I suggest McAfee removal for now. The McAfee installation apperars outdated anyway -

Thank you for the detailed reply, jc. Just a couple of queries:
For video out I use the HD5670 graphics card, and not the onboard integrated nVidia graphics. Would it be necessary to update these drivers, even though the integrated graphics aren't being used?
Having already done the HDD checkdisc routines (via Windows), would the diagnosoic tools you suggest go any further in any analysis of the HDD? Thanks in advance.

I didn't find NVIDIA video drivers loaded into RAM, just the NVIDIA nForce storage and the Ethernet drivers (so video drivers are not being updated here).

The HDD test is DOS-based, so Windows will not load. It is a comprehensive diagnostic test v. Windows chkdsk.

SeaTools (for DOS) - http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.js...00dd04090aRCRD

Burn ISO to CD with ImgBurn - http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Boot with SeaTools CD; run LONG test.

Thanks for all the help. In the end I just did a full re-install. MemTest was passed, Hard-disk showed no errors. But did not re-install McAfee, just in case. Went for Microsoft Security Essentials (for now). So far (early days), no problem. If it happens again, it will deffo be the graphics card via process of elimination, as that will be the only thing left unchanged. Thanks again.

Hi -

Glad to hear HDD and RAM passed. IMO, OS reinstall is the best way to help isolate hardware v. software cause in this case.

Good luck to you and thanks for posting back.
