Windows won't come out or reboot if in Sleep Mode

Windows 7. 64 bit PC. Custom built under 1 year old. If placed in sleep mode, clicking escape (or any key or mouse movement) will not work. Rebooting the computer does not work. The only method that works, and it works every time is unseating the discrete video, seating it again, and then starting up. Works every time. Also, if someone accidently hits the light switch that powers the computer...same thing happens. If the PC is shut down normally...all is good. Any thoughts?
