Crashes during sound/video but very random and weird crash, no BSOD

    Hi folks

I have an odd issue that I have come to the end of my knowledge about and I am stuck to be honest.

My fairly new (6 months) PC has a very odd way of crashing on me at completely random times although it does seem to happen more regularly when playing sound or video content (VLC, Spotify, Streaming Movies or TV etc) and it also seems to happen more often if I have bittorrent running in the background.

What basically happens is that the screen will freeze for a moment but the sound will continue to play, then any audio coming from the PC will slow right down (like dropping the pitch really low on a turntable) until it just sounds like electronic noises. The sound will continue to play until I reboot the PC but the screen will not change. Sometime I can still move the mouse, sometime I can't. The only way out of it is to hard reboot the computer.

I have checked all my drivers on numerous occasions, I have had it all apart and checked the hardware connections, virus checked and done a full clean reinstall of win 7 but still the same problem...

Any one out there had anything similar????

    Thanks

Does it still do it when booted in safe mode?

There are several ways to find what the problem is. The best is to go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Event viewer (local) and look for errors listed in the last day, week, etc. Then go to the windows log>application tab. Finally the windows Logs>system tabs.

You want to look for all errors (they have red in the left column ).

When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

When you find them please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

Thank you for your quick reply

I have followed your instructions and I think I have isolated the error code as I have kept a log of the time and date of the last few crashes and they match up.

    Here are the details

Session "Microsoft-Windows-Setup" stopped due to the following error: 0xC000000D

    - System

    - Provider

    [ Name] Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-EventTracing
    [ Guid] {B675EC37-BDB6-4648-BC92-F3FDC74D3CA2}

    EventID 3

    Version 0

    Level 2

    Task 2

    Opcode 14

    Keywords 0x8000000000000010

    - TimeCreated

    [ SystemTime] 2011-11-15T11:12:07.187500000Z

    EventRecordID 267

    Correlation

    - Execution

    [ ProcessID] 4
    [ ThreadID] 152

    Channel Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-EventTracing/Admin

    Computer Stu-PC

    - Security

    [ UserID] S-1-5-18

    - EventData

    SessionName Microsoft-Windows-Setup
    FileName C:\Windows\Panther\setup.etl

    Thanks Again

Also just to let you know, the only "critical" error that I get is code 41 - Kernal (power) which seems to correspond to me hard booting the PC after a crash. It is always preceded by the error in the above post.

    Thanks

Please read about the problem and possible fixes here Windows Vista - 0xc000000d - Microsoft Answers. Also applies to win 7

Thanks for the info but I don't see how it helps, the Kernal 41 error is generated when the PC is shut down without using the actual proper procedure - so therefore the only reason I keep getting this error is because I am switching off with the power button and not shutting down. It is a by product of the actual problem, but not the issue in itself!

I think what I am trying to say in the above post is that all the errors in the event viewer that are generated at the time of the crashes are due to me switching off the PC - there is nothing about the actual crash.
