Windows Explorer crash when viewing avi on external HD

Hello guys,

Heres a little background information

Dell XPS L501x
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit (came preloaded on computer)
Intel Core i7 1.73 Ghz
6gb memory

External HD: Western Digital My Book 3.0 2Tb

I have had this computer and external HD for a little over a year. Never had any issues. I primarily use the computer for video editing and the HD to store all my clips. Last week I tried to import some clips into Adobe Premiere as usual, but Adobe crashed. I went to the external HD to see what the deal was. I tried to play the files, but Explorer crashed. Ive been trying so many different things to get it fixed, but it just isnt working and Im growing discouraged and starting to feel as if my files are screwed

Heres what Ive tried

1. Optimizing the drive for performance
2. Ive tried and uninstalled codecs, media players etc
3. System Restore
4. Disabling thumbs
5. Multiple virus, spyware, defrag, and check disk scans etc
6. Starting in safe mode and clean mode...no luck
7. Tried ShellEx view and disabling all of the pink highlighted ones
8. Ive even gone through and uninstalled programs that werent useful or were installed shortly before this had begun
9. Updating video drivers
